Where can i find LL-01 5W-30 in Canada?
I went to Canadian tires, and searched everywhere online. Non of the shops have 5W30 LL01 oil. Some have 5W40 LL01. But i just wanna stick with 5W30 LL01... Anyone knows where i can get it from except for the stealership?

I run Castrol Edge Full Synthetic 0W-40 year round, no issues there! And it is great in the cold Canadian Winters!

This. I just started running the 0w40 this oc. Prior to this I was using liqui moly in 5w30 (supplied by my local indy). I would consider running the 0w30 German Castrol in the winter.

I'm currently using Mobil1 LL01 0w40 but plan on switching back to Castrol 0w30. Too bad they don't sell the Castrol in jugs; I hate the 1L containers Last edited by kenmar; 10-08-2016 at 07:19 AM.. |

Is there anything wrong with using 5w40 Castrol edge fully synthetic? or 0w40 castrol edge fully synthetic? It has LL-01 rating on the back as well. And has op mentioned. The 5w30 doesn't have LL 01 rating.

AFAIK, there is nothing wrong with them but some other forum members might have more info. Some years ago, the only LL01 oils commonly available were Mobil1 0w40 and Castrol 0w30. I didn't know that the Castrol 0w40 and 5w40 were now LL01. The primary reason for sticking with the first two is that lots of people had previously performed used oil analysis on them and were very happy with the test results. Also, the Castrol 0w30 is a special formulation that is produced in Germany, although I heard talk recently that it is now produced in Belgium.

Here's the question, why the BMW OEM 5W30 is the only LL01 oil, instead you can't find LL01 5W30 from any other engine oil brand? And i do know that BMW 5W30 is a basically Castrol 5W30. |

decided to do an oil change last night with 5w40 castrol edge - LL-01 approved. On sale for $32.99 for a 5 litre jug @ parts source, get a mann oil filter there too while you're at it

Just to confuse everyone on which oil to use ...
"Mobil 1 0w-40 euro no longer LL-01 approved since 11/2015": http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1230085 Some interesting points from Bob Is the Oil Guy (Note: GC = German Castrol, OCI = Oil Change Interval, UOA - Used Oil Analysis) ... Negative comments for BMW 5w30: "I've seen it with my own eyes too in my office mate's BMW. He does 15K mile OCIs with BMW 5W-30 which is way too long. The engine's internals are filthy. It's good oil but isn't capable of the miracles that BMW's OCI recommendations call for." and "since i heard there are so many failures of the new 335i engine i think that has sth to do with the factory oil (5W-30) therefore i will stay away from the 5W-30 and go for a better oil" https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ub...win#Post981162 "The BMW oil will be good; GC might be better...The BMW oil has moly to deal with wear; GC is most likely made with a better basestock that is more resistant to oxidation and shear." "This engine is extremely tough on oil. There have been a few cases I'm aware of where BMW oil was cooked by excessively high temperatures, which caused engine failures." https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ub...bo#Post1200595 Castrol 0w30 (https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ub...)#Post718643): "Basic information: ◾What is GC? GC stands for German Castrol. It's officially named Castrol Syntec 0w-30. I'm not sure who coined this term. ◾Why is it called GC? It is the ONLY Castrol Syntec made in Germany. ◾What makes this stuff so good? With any oil, it may not work well with your car. However, the majority of us love it. ◾Produces great UOA results. ◾Engines run quieter and smoother. (OK, that may be an opinion.) ◾Comparable price with other synthetics. ~$5 qt ◾GC is a TRUE synthetic. Made from PAO/Esters, not Group III. Click here for more reading. ◾The other Castrol Syntecs are not true synthetics. Other examples of true synthetic oils are Mobil1, Amsoil, Redline, and Royal Purple to name a few! ◾GC is good enough to have its own forum! That's gotta mean something. ◾What's bad about this stuff? Not much. ◾You might have a hard time finding it depending on where you live. ◾Your car might not like it. You'll never know until you try. Keep trying oils until you find one you're happy with. ◾Addicting. You'll see what I mean... ◾Is it "thin"? Come on, 0w-30 has to be watery. NO! Please don't completely buy into that myth. ◾At cold temps, the 0w weight correlates to cold cranking viscosity. That means GC will still flow at cold temps. (Which is a good thing!) ◾At operating temps, the 30 weight is actually close to a 40 weight. GC is one of the thickest 30 weight oils around. I don't want to go into too much detail about this here. It can be very confusing. My point is, GC is not "thin" in most temperatures that we use our cars in." Based on this wealth of information, I will be using Castrol 0w30 in my 335i Last edited by kenmar; 10-10-2016 at 09:11 PM.. |

What about Lucas Oil 5w-30? I just looked at the bottle I have and it says it's LL-04 approved.
According to this website, LL-04 "Can also be used where a BMW Longlife-98 or BMW Longlife-01 oil is recommended". http://www.oilspecifications.org/bmw.php Yet here, 5 years ago they quote a BMW bulletin saying not to use LL-04 outside of Europe... http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=541486 |
