Misfire on ALL 6 cylinders + HUGE white smoke
Went to Indy shop .... I think the guy doesn't know what he is talking about.
He told me it needs : - new coils packs = 220$ - new sparks plugs = 600$ - 4 hours of time = 240$ price seems too high, and diagnostic suck. What do you guys think ? I think I will just end up going to dealership, what you guys think ? |

I mean he is diagnosing it right being that it misfired. Idk about the white smoke, that could be part of the misfires.
It's odd that all cylinders misfired. Do you have a scanner? Try resetting it and check to see what comes back. Fix the misfires accordingly. Google "misfire sticky" and it should tell you everything you need to know. If not, you are in the hands of Indy"s and the dealership. But coils and spark plugs are super easy DIY. I can even do it

White smoke is antifreeze getting in to the cylinders. Bad head gasket?

New coil packs price was $175 from german-supply on ebay, bosch sparks cost me $67 from a ebay seller as well. I did the installs myself they arent hard to change. Those numbers they gave sound like the ones from bmw expect they wanted $465 for spark plugs. Those prices are out of hand, but bmw will be more. In terms of the white smoke could be VCG OR turbos. Mine was both dealer changed turbos, but i changed the VCG bmw wanted $2,100.

He should pressure test the coolant system. He should also monitor the pressure with the car running to see if RPM has eny effect on pressure.

If the white smoke is not coming out of the exhaust it could be an external antifreeze leak dropping on the hot exhaust pipes causing smoke too. If coming out of the exhaust it would indicate internal engine or related parts I would think.

black smoke that smells like gasoline is the only kind that would be fixed by plugs and coils. Blue or white smoke is oil or water, respectively, leaking in the cylinder, usually it's really bad news.

Any O2 sensor codes?
Also, that shop must charge $500/hr. The plugs cost you $65-75 (we will say $100 for them supplying), and an hour of labor. |

How does the car run? Idle ok? Stumble on power?
I'm sure it's a good idea to replace all coils... but if it runs not all are bad or it wouldn't run... pretty much either they work or they dont...I had just one coil go bad and it was hardly driveable.. oil leaked into the spark plug hole and shorted out a coil. I'd also do a compression test aka leak down test too while the plugs are out. How did this start? Normal driving or beating on it? Last edited by slimxb8; 07-21-2015 at 09:45 PM.. |

White smoke is usually a sign that the head gasket is leaking internally. Something is getting into the cylinders that shouldn't. |

As others have said, lots of white smoke at all times is usually a head gasket coolant leak (in a single cylinder!). White-ish smoke with a subtle blue hue is usually an oil leak. Depending on when / how it appears is a clue to whether is it rings (on acceleration) or valve guides (on decel) or turbo. I would find another shop and get a second opinion. |
