Lightbulb Process of getting BMW serviced?

I recently was gifted a 2008 335xi. I know nothing about cars besides whatever I was taught at driving school. The car has 110k miles. The car is lightly modded. All I know is that its pushing about 400hp. The service light came up. I'm planning on taking good care of this car and I just wanted to know what to expect when I bring my car to get serviced. Thank you for your knowledge masters of BMWS.

Also if anyone is from around the Brooklyn, New York area and knows where or who I should be bringing my car to?

You might want to check with an Advance Auto or similar to get the code read. This hopefully may give you an indication of what is wrong. The one bad thing about these cars is service can get very expensive - especially if you don't DIY. Hopefully someone in the area can give you a referral to a good mechanic. Good luck with it.

335xi pushing 400hp is no lightly modded 335i.

Do not go to the dealership for any work, if you value your money.

When you bring the car in for service you can expect to have an oil leak, either from oil filter housing, or valve cover, or oil pan gasket, or all three.

Check engine light will likely be related to one of the following: injectors, O2 sensors, vacuum leaks, fuel pump, usually something to do with lean or rich running conditions.

If you can, get in touch with whoever gifted you the car and get a service and mod history.

Congratulations on getting this car free. You will enjoy driving it.
