Hi guys,

new to this forum, was wondering if I could have some advice

I've got a E92 335i 2006 and I'm currently looking at ways to make the exhaust sound better without spending too much. I've looked into various options and muffler delete sounds like a good option for me because its cheap-ish (can be done for around £180) cat/resonator stays and doesn't increase emissions etc...

A few people have said its a good idea but others have said it would be too loud, including the garage themselves (I can't really tell 100% from the video above also, but it doesn't sound ridiculously loud to me...)

do you think on idle / driving normally a muffler delete wouldn't be too noisy? also this won't effect performance / remaps in any way?

Hmmm it's an interesting mod for sure but I have a feeling it would be too loud potentially (especially if the garage even advises as such). It will more than likely drone quite a bit cruising on the motorway for example. Have you thought about the PE mod?

Not ideal but i have experienced muffler delete on my 325i and i think the results will be much the same on your 335i, saying that it really just comes down to what you class as too loud. I know a guy that has muffler delete on a 325i and docent think its too loud at all but the other vehicle he drives is a Harley Davidson !

I had my 325i rear exhaust set up changed to twin tips ( 335i style ) the factory muffler had to be removed to make room. For me the muffler delete was way too loud. Don't get me wrong for a blast around the back roads it was great but anything else it was awful especially when you have passengers and you can't hear yourself think for the drone. I called the exhaust shop that done it and they offered to fit an aftermarket back box which was smaller than the factory one. The car now sounds perfect for me i would say its right around half way between factory and muffler delete.

Another option i have seen done which i would prefer was a 330i that had muffler delete kinda... the car still just has factory setup with 2 exhaust tips at on side ( Not 335 style ). They fitted a valve just before the back box so that with the touch of a button the car can go from muffler delete to factory, works similar to armitix exhausts. I would love to have this option on my car as it offers the best of both worlds but can't be done as the factory back box will no longer fit on my car.

As i said not ideal as I'm talking about the N52 engine but i have a feeling the 335i will be much the same WAY too loud with muffler delete but i would look into these new valves that they can fit either that or remove the factory back boxes and replace with smaller ones that way the change won't be so dramatic.

Oh and youtube videos in my experience are a waste of time ! you will never truly know until you drive the car yourself.

doing the "PE Mod" is probably the best best if you dont want silly loud.

Involves cutting the boxes open and removing part of the resonator.

saying that, the 335i will be quieter than NA engines, as the turbochargers take a lot of energy out the exhaust stream.

Appreciate all the advice all! Just looking into the Valve / PE Mod options now.

I quite like the sound of the PE Mod option, hopefully they should be able to do it.

You could also cut the secondary cats out for more noise

I take it you've done the golf tee mod? For me, that's loud enough! (I've had my fill of droning jap exhausts in my lifetime!)

is the same as catless downpipes? / is it noticeable?

Nope sounds different and you don't need to worry about MOT failing/smell of fuel as the primaries remove most of that.

Why waste your money? I think the 335i sounds great as it is, especially in sports mode when it crackles back through the exhaust on overrun, but then maybes I'm getting old.
