For the Canadians out there, Motomaster Formula 1 synthetic 5w40 meets ACEA A3/B4, MB 229.3, VW 502 and 505, and Porsche A40. I read that it's relabeled Castrol Edge 5w40, which also meets LL01. It's possible that BP reserved the LL01 spec for Castrol since it was the "recommended" brand by BMW.

It's not a bad deal when on sale for ~$28/5L.

I wonder why Mobil 1 0W-40 FS (full synthetic) is no longer BMW LL01 approved.

Apparently, Mobil 1 sold in UK is still BMW LL01 approved.

Comparing
http://pds.mobil.com/UK-English/Lube...ife_0W-40.aspx

to

http://pds.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub..._FS_0W-40.aspx

I see that FS 0W-40 is only slightly less viscous than the 0W-40 sold in the UK..

And, I see that the spec for ACEA A3/B4 includes (still) the BMW stamp of approval for their 5W-40 and 5W-30 products (which I believe are the BMW recommended oils for E90/N52 engines).

Really happy with Motul 8100 X-cess in my N54. Keeps things cools and car runs smoother and quieter. Highly recommend!

Just put this in today after using Mobile-1 0w-40 the past 9 months 6,000 miles and the previous oil change. Prior to that was in the UK and used Castrol Edge. Can't complain about the price and glad to find another LL-01 source/supplier. Always love the sound and feel of how smooth this engine is after an oil change. So very nice.

castrol 5w-40

you can find oil capacity for your engine online. do not use mobil 1. 5w-30 or 5w-40 is best for your engine.

I used it to my old car (Skoda Octavia 1.8t 20v) for 7 years with change every 7500km. It was very good and the engine still runs with no problems. I also used the redline MT90 (i think) for the gearbox and it was also very good.

Very good oil and many people with tuned cars used to use it in Greece!

I understand that Pennzoil and BMW are now in partnership -- over to www.pennzoil.com and they have an oil selector for your vehicle:

and for my 2009 E90, they recommend Pennzoil Platinum Euro SAE 5W-40 Full Synthetic Motor Oil - about $48-50 for a 6 pack of quarts. A full synthetic made from natural gas, and the claim is purity...

Changed the oil this weekend.

If you want more:

https://bobistheoilguy.com/pennzoil-q-a/

5. As a user of Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40, where does that product fit among the new Pennzoil PlatinumŽ and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum™ with PurePlus™ Technology offerings?

Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40 is an ACEA A3/B4 type oil and is suitable for vehicles where the motor oil type is required as an SAE 5W-40 grade. The new, comparable product is named Pennzoil PlatinumŽ Euro Full Synthetic motor oil with PurePlus™ Technology 5W-40.

I just switched to Shell Rotella T6 5w40 after using castrol for a long time and am very pleased with the results. the valves are now silent on startup and the HVA tick closer to the end of the OCI interval is virtually gone.

this, AMSOIL, Motul, and Liqui moly are some of the best on the market. I would stay away from the likes of Mobil 1 and Castrol and also stick to 5w40/30.

Garage List
Hello,
First oil change is due on my 100k car. I've done my searches (necessary disclaimer when posting about oil), and I still have a question. Important info:
N52 engine in a 328xi
mild, temperate climate
style: proactive street, some WOT but no track/cross.

On Amazon I've located a couple LL-01 oils. The easiest to obtain outside the internet (in case I need to buy local later) is Castrol Edge Euro. It comes in two weights: 5w-30 and 0w-40. They are both certified LL-01, and they have a MASSIVE price difference. Bizarrely, it is the 5w-30 which is much more expensive.

Since I live in a mild climate and my car is non-turbo, I'd normally get the 5w-30. Only 5w-30 and 5w-40 are recommended in the owner's manual, but I'm honestly not certain if 0w-40 even existed in 2008.
My goals:
Stay LL-01
save money
remove/reduce lifter tick on cold startup
not lose measurable freeway mpg
not hurt the engine (IOW to stay within the "spirit" of BMW factory recommendations)

I know the 0w-40 satisfies the first two but will it satisfy all of these?
