Im reposting this hear for the Canadians out there to keep an eye for this as well. I've read two other posts here on E90post.com about a similar type event on the N54 engine. Nothing, though, from Canadians.

Read the post for my cracked power steering pully and idler pully (i would have put just the plural of pully, but is that pullyies or pullies - i think it's pullies).

Anyhow, Dupont St at 3:45 pm yesterday; car starts blowing hot air; steering becomes stiff; red battery light; stall. Restart 'er up, gently drive into gas station just east of ossington on the north side of dupont. Use BMW Assist, flat bed the car to dealership. John, the driver from Abram's was very nice during the 40 minute drive in rush hour. Thanks John.

Here's what's gone on since June 1st:

(Just listing facts):
1. Upon delivery the dashboard car lighter was not functioning for either the lighter or a car charger to work properly
2. Upon Delivery The BMW Assist was non-functioning and I took the vehicle back to the dealership to be corrected (I was given a loaner for two days - luckily I had this fixed)
3. On June 19th there was a rain storm in Toronto and there was a leak over the driver side window
-I took the car to the dealership and was assured the leak was fixed (I was given a loaner for two days)
4. On July 12th, there was another rain storm in Toronto, and the roof again leaked at exactly the same spot (was provided a loaner from the dealership for 5 days)
5. Upon inspection of the rear seat console, there are no cup holders where they should be present. Well, there are no cup holders, period, in the back seat (awaiting a retrofit)
6. Now, the power steering and idler pullies (sp?) cracked, destroying the serpentine belt. Vehicle at dealership currently.


If this had happened 10 minutes earlier, I would have been on the Gardner Expwy, a lovely place to have car troubles.


Sure cars have moving parts, but c'mon.

My question is:
What can cause one of these pullies to crack?
