BMW Newbie Here
Hi All,
Just bought my first BMW. 2011 328xi 6 speed with only 51000 miles. Nothing fancy, no nav, now power seat...but hey for $7500 who cares! Not a stranger to German luxury though...i've owned 5 Audi's and have a Q8 on the way for the family car..the BMW is my lil beater/maybe modify a little car. Ya know, wheels, suspension, intake, exhaust...i guess theres not many power adders of the N52B30. Looks like the AFE intake gets more hp and torque than some of the ECU upgrades. Anything i should be on the lookout for? From what Ive been told, the straight 6 is pretty damn reliable. |

The N52 is a rock solid engine. It'll leak a bit of oil at the valve cover, oil filter housing, and oil pan.
The only real power increase is swapping out the intake manifold with the 3-stage manifold from a 330i and a ECU tune to control the DISA valves in the manifold (the 328i version does not have the DISA valves). There is also the ability to increase the valve lift for more power as well. The sub-forum for the N/A engine will give you all the info you need on those modifications. And don't get BMWitis and over-maintain the thing because it doesn't need it. Welcome to the Forum. Lots of great info here.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Thanks guys. Going to start modding car shortly. Springs, wheels, black kidney grills, some sort of rear spoiler, afe intake, new shift knob and ebrake handle both with alcantara boots, maybe wrap my interior woodgrain with carbon fiber. Just did oil change, new wipers, new filters (not fuel), new headlight bulbs and new fog light bulbs. It only has 51000 miles and runs super smooth, so no need to do plugs and coils yet. Im so up in the air about exhausts though....ive gone to youtube and listened to them all, but i want to hear in person...might just have one cstom built...no idea. Maybe next year i will do the intake manifold mod go get a few more ponies out of her. looking forward to everyones help on here!
Cheers! |

Congrats on the E90! Hope you're loving it so far, just got my E92 3 weeks ago and it's been amazing. The only thing I would look out for definitely is the oil filter housing gasket. It can randomly go bad at any time, mine was just "sweating" and I ended up getting it replaced (picked up part at the dealer and had it installed by my mechanic). Also definitely make sure you replace any bad or old hoses, even if they look somewhat old, it'll save you MANY MANY headaches in the future, believe me.
Also, this is gonna sound stupid but, make sure all your tires are the same tread and brand because it turns out mine had 4 different brand tires on the car and this was causing A LOT of wear on the transmission. One of the quick mods I would recommend is replacing your start button for a red one, it costs about $10 on Amazon and is easy to install, there are many tutorials on YouTube! I'm sort of a beginner and it took me about 15-20 minutes being very careful and patient. Best of luck with your beautiful E90

May I say that a small M3-style trunk spoiler is my favorite mod?
May I also point out (ungraciously?) that all E9x were 6 speeds, whether they had automatics or automatics? You should describe your car as a 6MT, not "6 speed". |

Not sure about London, but in the US the E90 325i was only made in 2006. Being 13 years old now, the service/maintenance history of the car will really be a determining factor in reliability going forward.
