Thanks! The blue does stand out and gets LOTS of comments...very dynamic in the sun. I regularly have people leaning out of car windows at stop lights commenting on the color. Plus, I think it's about the darkest color you can get that stays reasonably clean-looking. Never a black car ever again!

And...you're right about the wheel choice. I have been thinking about the 359s for a looong time. Love 'em...a nice change but sticking with the OEM look. Just can't (yet) justify spending the bucks when I have six of these CS7s. But....the time is coming, probably when I need new rubber.

(I have also thought about going back to 18" rims for ride comfort and started a thread for people to show their 18" wheels on E92/93s. Looking mainly for pics of 359s in 18". Seems like they'd be a nice "18 1/2"-looking rim. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...26quot%3B+rims )

Spare Tire Setup

Got tired of the drama of riding around with no spare. I rarely use my trunk for anything other than groceries...fold down the rear seat instead...and can still fit a fair amount in the trunk with this setup (unless the roof is in the trunk, of course).

So...I ordered the spare tire kit with tray (Bimmerzone), cargo net and Tire Totes (OEM), and a Gorilla extendable lug wrench and set of tire felts (TireRack) and used a ratcheted tie-down strap (PepBoys) to hold it in place. I laid it on a drop cloth and snuck in a set of jumper cables.

Now...flat out no worries, mate.

I basically did the same thing with my interior. Plus 3M CF DiNoc wrap the trip pieces. Also purchased a center and rear console in black and swapped those out. I still have to install the black plastic rear headrest back covers

Just givin' some grief. Normally, when ya make a statement like that, ya gotta follow it up with AT LEAST one pic or a link (when posting in the Photo Gallery section). It's one of those unspoken forum rules. You know that.

Thanks! The interior project was definitely my favorite...and well worth it. And, I've been waiting for someone to hit my rear so I can replace the bumper! I've always loved the M-sport rear.

Sapphire Goes Low

Installed a custom subwoofer after hearing how good the Logic 7 system could sound with a little cleaning up of the signal using a DAC (that I used with the AirEnabler/AirPlay). I started with the Creative Labs Soundblaster, but...curiosity got the best of me and I ordered a Fiio E17, which was supposed to be a significantly better DAC. And...it IS! Wow!

Here is the thread for the enclosure build (in the Audio section):
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...33&postcount=2

Here are the threads I started during the process of hooking up all of the connections. Every great project has its moments, right?
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1070246
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1070473

Here is the finished product. The box dimensions had a few specific requirements: Had to be as large as possible (as close to 0.75 cu ft as I could make it); sub had to fit inside the ski pass; had to allow the amp to be mounted to it; had to be able to have the convertible top go into the trunk (VERY important! ) and still allow me to get my spare tire in the trunk (which necessitated the side-mounting of the amp).

So, the enclosure ended up being 25"w x 13"h X 5"d with a 9.5" amp mount as the left side piece. The internal volume of the box ended up being 0.62 cu ft (including the volume of the nose cone. Haven't needed to use "pi" in a while ), a bit shy of the minimum 0.75 recommended by Diamond for their 10" D3 sub, but...it sounds GREAT (especially with the signal cleaned up by the AirEnabler/Fiio E17 DAC. THAT was an amazing upgrade...like having a new component system.). I like accurate bass (not deep boom) and, combined with the mid bases under the seats in the Logic 7 system, this box does the trick. Right now I have everything set FLAT on the EQ and it's close to perfect.

Installed pics to follow...after the rain stops.

Our convertibles are pretty heavy bud- how much more extra weight does all the stuff add I wonder?

Great job nonetheless though- beautiful car with great projects that I can only dream of doing myself!

Thanks! I JUST wondered the same thing about the weight. But...I'm in this car by myself 95% of the time and I figured it all adds up to less than one (overweight) passenger.

This is definitely my favorite car of all time and plan to drive her for quite a bit longer. So, if I can avoid the crazies on the road, the upgrades will be worth it.

The sound upgrade was well worth it and didn't cost me much...other than time...since I had all of the equipment from my previous car. The interior project was the pricey thing but I've enjoyed it so much, I don't think about the cost...much.

So, if you're gonna keep your car awhile, keep dreamin'!

Project Sound Upgrade

Well...I finished Stage Two of the sound upgrade, and...may never have to go to stage 3. I'm blown away!

Stage 1:
1) Air Enabler Airplay
2) Fiio E-17 DAC/headphone amp
3) Jackery Giant external battery
4) Subwoofer/sub amp added (See post 101 and 103 above)
5) Reloaded all CDs onto iTunes using Apple Lossless Encoding
6) Downloaded and used Onyx Spectrum Analyzer app, using iPhone as source and iPad mini as analyzer (with external mic).

The sound at the end of stage 1 was amazing when compared to stock system. Never thought the Logic 7 could sound this good....better staging, clarity, definition, etc. Really impressed.

Name: ProjectSound5reduced.jpg
Views: 1116
Size: 148.2 KB

But...my curiosity got the best of me and I ordered the BavSound (BSW) Stage One upgraded speaker system (front only). I installed them today, and so began...

Name: ProjectSound1reduced.jpg
Views: 1041
Size: 214.1 KB

Stage 2:

1) BavSound (BSW) Stage One Speaker Upgrade
2) Re-equalize the sound using the Onyx Spectrum Analyzer app.

And...to use a very outdated cliche'...OMG! Everything that has been said good about the BSW Stage One is true. The soundstage opened up and I am hearing things in songs that I haven't heard since my near competition-ready system in my last car. In some regards, my current system sounds better, thanks to the 8" woofers under the seats. Once again, I am blown away!

Well...look at the comparison between L7 and BSW:
Name: BSWvsL7.jpg
Views: 1137
Size: 151.4 KB

Here they are in place...no more silver cone or tweeter, which I kinda liked with the brushed aluminum trim, but...
Name: ProjectSound6reduced.jpg
Views: 1116
Size: 184.9 KB

I have been reading and researching the use of new components, amps, DSPs (e.g. JBL MS-8), etc. etc. and dreading the thought of spending all of that money, especially on a convertible driven by someone with some significant hearing loss above 5k. Now...it'll be a while before I think about that again.

I am very satisfied with this MAJOR sound upgrade for relatively little money.

So...my advice (for what it's worth) to those wanting better sound while staying on a budget:

1) Clean up the signal! (especially if using phone or iPod as source or music, and ESPECIALLY if you are using the AUX input like I am forced to do). The AirEnabler combined with the Fiio E-17 did just that. Then, use Apple Lossless Encoding if you are using iTunes to download CDs.
2) Get a sub and amp (gotta have the sub-bass...and thump!)
3) Consider the BSW Stage One upgrade. I don't think you can find a better deal than $350 to improve the quality of your sound when it comes to speakers (without going to additional amps)....unless you get them on sale like I did at $317.

BTW - Here are my EQ settings after using the Spectrum Analyzer app:

It really was worth the bucks.

AirEnabler - $60 (Amazon)
Fiio E-17 - $140 (Amazon)
Jackery Giant (optional) - $40 (amazon)
BavSound Stage One - $317 (on sale)
Onyx Spectrum Analyzer app - $15 (App Store)
Dayton Audio iMM-6 Calibrated Measurement Microphone - $19

I had the Diamond Audio D3 10" sub from my previous car. The sheet of MDF cost me $42 and Lowes cut it to my specs for FREE. Maybe $40-50 for sub enclosure "carpet", glue, screws, new drill bit, etc. to make the sub box.

Overall, very good cost to result ratio.

Project Performance Underway

Well, the extended CPO finally ran out, so... (Amended 3-26-15)

...time to start on the performance end of things:
1) BMW Performance Exhaust - check! Installed last Friday. Love it!
2) "Eurobox" air intake with K&N filter - To be installed 3-17-15 along with #3.
3) 3.0 Intake manifold conversion - Used one fell into my lap...being installed 3-27-15
4) AA tune - Debating this now. No local dealers had the equipment to install. But...will probably order G5 tool and get tune next week after tomorrow's mods.

Not a lot of pics for this post, I guess. You all know what the exhaust looks and sounds like and what the Euro air intake looks like. Guess the only pic to follow will be of the ticket I get the first week after making these changes.

Oh yeah...a couple of months ago, I replaced the fog lamps housings and used Nokya 2500k yellow bulbs. Got tired of trying to match the Lux 8 v5 LED AE's.

I did find one major advantage of having the adjustable AE's from LUX: I was in an accident a few months ago and had to replace the driver's side headlamp. The difference in clarity...and color...of my older head lamp (the car is an '08) was very disappointing. Most of you know that the fiber optics inside these older lamps turn a bit yellow with age...almost unnoticeable with stock H8 bulbs but readily apparent once you go to whiter bulbs if your headlights are two different ages like mine are.

Solution: I set the driver's LUX 8 v5 to 5000k and the passenger side to 5200k, and...they match perfectly!

Using the BMWhat app, I also coded out the amber corners but left the LEDs on, which compliment the yellow fogs and make the light set look like the newer cars.
