Replacement hard drive for CIC

Hi all,

My wife's CIC unit has decided that it didn't want to stay on for very long and keeps rebooting when first started, eventually settling.

At first I thought it was the hard drive, as we cannot see any songs on the multimedia player thing. The maps are showing OK though.

Verrrry occasionally, it will actually find the songs and play them but that's rare.

I followed this post to copy everything from the original drive to the CF card/adapter combo.

I used the dd method by creating a whole image and writing it back. However, the problem remains. Maps are showing OK but nothing in multimedia (says 'searching' and is all greyed out) and available disk space is showing nothing.

Strangely, the CD drive doesn't seem to want to read CDs either any more - just says Checking... and then gives up.

And it still reboots itself.

I mounted the original hard drive under QNX and can see a bunch of RippedXX folders under there. I am wondering if this original hard drive has been corrupted in more ways than one - like partition descriptions being corrupt...

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Any ideas anyone? With the replacement drive, I still get the occasional multimedia songs (and CD working!) but it's like 1 in 100 chance of it happening.

Are the multimedia songs indexed anywhere on one of the other partitions?

You could always run the chkfs Qnx command on the new drive's Music partition.

I wonder if that is also being used to buffer the CD?

Do the symptoms change in really hot and/or cold weather?

If so then the issue is most likely one of the onboard chips needing to be resoldered/reballied due to heat/cold expansion and contraction, and the chip losing connection.

Did that - no issues with the hard drives...

I am in UK so pretty chilly here all the time at the moment. Your theory is plausible... I sent the unit off to Romania for repair as reballing is beyond my abilities/equipment (and I didn't feel like sticking it in the oven!).
