Corner Delete Mod for e90 (part I)

Well, we've been working on this for awhile, so I thought I'd write this part up officially. First of all, this is a DIO (do-it ourselves) not a DIY. This would have been impossible without the input of 69vette, ADHD, Ksfrogman, ///Matt, mrdirosa, and many others.

see this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37950

So....parts needed

1. Two (2) 6 Ohm resistors
2. Wire cutters
3. Quick-connects or wirecaps
4. Wire stripper/wire cutter
5. electric tape

I got the resistors from this vendor: http://jlevistreetwerks.com/store/in...cc7e41b73709b5

They come as a part of the LED turn signal kit. The instructions that are "included" pertain to the e46, not the e90...so see below for installation instructions.

CAVEAT: Following this DIY will accomplish one of two things for you:
1. use of LED's for turn signal
2. angel eyes only (AEO) when parking lights turned on. At this point, Part I will give you AEO, but YOU WILL LOSE FRONT TURN SIGNAL FUNCTION.

Step 1.
remove the air filter housing. This DIY tells you how:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30688

Step 2. unclip the headlight adapter from the back of the headlight. Pressing the side of the adapter allows the side clips to lift. Then "wiggle" the adapter side to side to remove it. Remove the cover off the back of the adpater. There are two small clips that are easy to remove. DO NOT ALLOW THIS COVER TO FALL into the engine bay. It's a pain to find and fish out...trust me. The attached figure will help understand the following step.

The wire plugged into slot #2 (#2) is the ground wire. The wire plugged into slot #12 (#12) is the wire for the front turn signal. Using the Quick-connects, or by splicing, attach on end of the resistor to to #12. (When you do this, try to leave 2-3 inches of wire from the adapter. This will allow you room to work for step II of this mod.) Then quick-connect or splice the other end to #2.

There is are two steel braces that goes from front to back on the engine bay. One sits right under the air filter housing, and there is one on the passenger side as well. I drilled a hole in each and screwed the resistor to these steel braces. The resistors get VERY HOT, so you need to attach them to a metal part of the car to prevent damage.

At this point, you will be able to replace your front turn signal with an LED without getting an error. The LED's that come in the kit need to be sanded down slightly to fit. If you buy the kit, you'll see what I mean.

The next step in this mod will prep your car for Part II (not yet fully elucidated) but will lose you front turn signal function. But it will gain you AEO: cut #12 between where you placed the resistor and the headlight adapter.

Now reconnect everything and re-install your air filter housing.

Congrats! you now have AEO on your e90!

Part II of this mod is posted below in post # 7

Please remember: I am not, nor is e90post.com, nor any of its administrators responsible for ANY injury to you, you car, or other individuals and /or their cars if you follow this DIY and f*ck up.

I will
but gotta wait till better weather to make the drive to Oakville!

for now Chesmu has figured out how to use the angels only (the side signals don't light up, but at the same time they don't ever light up), but I think he's not too far from achieving functional signals as well (he's working on Part II of this mod)

Congrats. You're almost there.

I've been thinking that if I do this, I may use a relay so that I could switch the corners on and off. Off for show, on for go.

Corner Delete Mod for e90 - Part II

The CDM is complete! I now have AEO and functional turn signals!

So, here we go:

Parts needed:
1. Four (4) lengths of 16 gauge wire, the more you got the better
2. wire cutters/strippers
3. electric tape
4. Jack, jackstands, etc

Step 1. With your air filter housing still out, raise your front end. You can do one side at a time, or lift the entire front end at once. Remove the driver side front tire. You DO NOT have to remove the wheel well liner.

Once the wheel is off, you will be able to identify a wrapped set of wires coming into the wheel well from the back of the wheel well. Unwrap or cut into this bundle of wires. Identify the blue/yellow strip wire. This is the power supply wire from the sidemarker. Also identify the brown wire, which is your ground wire. Splice/quick-connect into these wires (one wire per wire). Pick a color for your power supply (i chose yellow) and a different color wire for your ground (mine is blue). You can pass these wirs into the engine bay thru the very evident opening. Once the wires are inthe engine bay, connect your ground wire to the ground wire (#4) in the headlight adapter. Connect the power supply to wire #12 that you had clipped in part I.

Now for the fun part...the passenger side. BMW engineers apparently don't believe in symmetry.

Take the passenger side tire off. In the wheel well you will see a plastic pipe entering from the engine bay into the wheel well. This pipe continues into the back the the wheel well and disappears. This is the pipe for the windshield washer fluid.

In the engine bay, identify this pipe. Through the hole that this pipe passes thru you can pass your two wires into the wheel well. At this point, connect your ground wire to wire #4, and your power supply to wire # 12 which you clipped earlier.

Now take the passenger side marker out and let it dangle. In the wheel well, take your two wires and, giving yourself some slack, pass them thru a small slot you will see at the very edge of the wheel well which is in direct line with the sidemarker. Just keep passing wire into this small slot and feeling for it with your finger in the sidemarker hole. Eventually you will feel it...then pull it thru. Connect the appropriate wires. In the wheel well, you can tuck the wires you've passed thru into the edge of the wheelwell and they will stay. This keeps the wires away from the tire.

Now...Put everything back together.

and have a beer and wait for it to get dark...

BTW: I'm still not responsible if you f*ck up and ruin your car.

hard to say because I did it in parts with some trial and error.

I'd give yourself atleast three hours. And and a cool engine bay is nice.

didnt take pics during install. Once you're in the engine bay and wheel well, things are pretty self-evident. As far as pics of the product....waiting for the dark. Pics later tonite.

I actually have never done serious wiring before... OK I've installed ceiling fans and ligt fixtures in my house, but that's it. As long as you are careful, there isn't a lot of risk involved. If you have any specific questions, let me know.

WAIT!!!

Got an error message when I went out driving tonite. All the blinkers still work, but the "bulb-out" error message comes on, and the blinkers all go rapid "sort-circuit" kind of blinking. A ground wire issue, maybe? I'll check my grounds tomorrow. Sorry to get hopes up...guess we're not done yet. I swear it tested OK like three or four times. I don't get it....

Hey Chesmu, any chance you can post the resistor part number? The link you provided just shows the company general site.

Hey Leo, any chance you will take this project on if Chesmu can find a fix for the error?

Several things that I am hesitating on is 1) the error, and 2) the lack of photo. My personal preference is that I work really well with photos, it reassure me of what I am doing. Not that his texts are bad or anything. The other thing is I dont like messing with electrical. I'll just wait to see if the error is fixed b4 i decide.

You can get the resistor two ways from this site:
1. search "resistor" on their site

2. Purchase the LED turn signal kit

A pic of the resistor is in the "corner delete mod" thread in the "cosmetic" sub-forum.

The resistors are 20.00 each, but the kit is only 35.00 and includes two resistors. That's why I bought the kit. Remember, though that the included directions are for teh e46. The initial part of this DIY (part I) still works...it's the second part that I haven't figured out yet.

Tried again this afternoon... changed the ground to wire #2....

I swear it works the first two or three times, and then I get the damn error message. Any ideas?

edit: here are pics of teh headlight adapters. Pic #1 is the passenger side detached from the headlight. Pic #2 is the driver side still attached.

I'm not a tech guy but since you have LED bulb and LED don't use that much electricity just connect it to your side bulbs I think that will work the only turn on went you use your turning signal. I think that may work
