Is flat tire monitor reliable? Or anyone else getting false warnings

I found the FTM concept pretty nice and always filled up my tires when tire air is cold/room temp then immediately reset it the flat monitor via iDrive. All is good.

But every now and then I get a warning flat tire detected. I check the FTM panel and shows all tires are yellow so I know it's not actually a flat....

Is there an issue with my system or it's expected and "normal" to get these. Anyone else experienced same thing.

And it's not like there is a huge temperature swing outside. Right now it's summer.

does the FTM actually identifiy the tire?

mine does not, but it's ccc.

it did when I still had the RDC module and the full TPMS.

as for false alarms, mine hasn't.
it's been quiet for months.

When I go into the FTM screen it does show the 4 tires usually green when all is good. Since it showed the tires individually colors I always thought it was able to point and specify which tire.

Are you on runflats?

If you were, I was going to recommend you pay close attention to the alerts. Since you're not and all seems to be well, I'm really not sure.

The beauty of FTM is that it looks at the rolling radius of each wheel relative to the others. So in theory, it should not be bothered by changes in ambient temp. Every time mine has gone off, it's been correct in that one of my tires in lower than the others.

I'm not sure what's typical, but FTM in my car doesn't tell me which corner to check.

Ohhhhhh shit so it does NOT individually tell you which tire?

Ok I think it makes sense now then. One of my tires was VERY low to my eye the other day and I had to put air. So maybe all this time I was dismissing it thinking it was a false positive but it was actually alerting me properly

Ok I'll keep that in mind next time!

FTM works well. One of my tires was at 17 PSI and it went off.

Code out FTM, enable RDC. No stupid expensive sensors to break, still warns you when a tire is low.

What sensors? FTM use already existing ABS or wheel speed sensors I believe.

OP isn’t referring to TPMS (w/ pressure sensors), he’s got FTM which uses the existing wheel speed sensors.

Looks like RDC is the equivalent of FTM but for BMW’s motorbike division, ya?

pretty sure 2011 cars have TPMS, not FTM - sorry, that's why I got the acronyms confused, because you have an LCI car and it should have TPMS.

No, not in Canada, they kept FTM until F series I believe.

Ah. Lucky you. It was mandated here at some point. Our X5 has it and it doesn't really work any better than FTM IMO.

it's not really hard to figure out which tire is low anyway, you can get a pressure gauge for like $10.

It is extremely reliable. Found two leaks in my tires, that couldn't be detected by sight as it was a slow leak. It's an ingenious system, as others have stated it uses the existing speed sensor, not sure if any other cars have it

toyota has used it for years using the abs sensors.

I don't know why it didn't catch on everywhere else. Maybe it just doesn't work well with runflats?

TPMS is *mandatory* in the USA - since 2008. FTM doesn't meet the requirements of law, even if it's just as effective.

Before BMW totally started to suck, they had FTM ages ago - on the E39 and E46. Way before Ford, GM, Toyota, etc were forced by law to do so.

BTW, you can blame shitty Ford engineering for the mandatory TPMS system. Nearly 4,000 people died in Bronco II and Explorer rollovers between 1983 and 2001 - which they blamed on the tire manufacturers.
