New engine, old trans

Ok so here it goes. I have a 2011 335i e90 xdrive auto. I put a hole in the block, so I bought a 2011 rwd e92 manual parts car to take the motor out of. We got the motor in and it spun fine before we mated it to the old auto trans. Now that it's mated, we tried to start it but all we get is starter click. Thought it could be a bad starter so we took that off and put a different one in but same thing. Almost looks like starter gear is running into the flex plate in the torque converter instead of going in between the gears to spin it. Thinking the zf might have gone into a fail safe mode when the old motor blew, any ideas? Is it common for blown motors to take transmissions with them or could be something hooked up wrong?

I would do a search but I think the manual trans has a flywheel not a flex plate. Did you compare the two before install?
