With the M5 at least 600lbs heavier than an e92 335 and not nearly the torque, there's no way the M5 had a chance from a low-rpm roll-on. Bad idea.

If the M5 simply did a run from 5k in the top of second gear, did the 3-beeps-and-go and left even with the e92, I think the outcome would have been a lot different.

Seems like they could make that same M3 engine put out about 375 HP and 340 or so TQ. I think that would be a better car.

I used to own a 350z and althought it is lower power I loved the ratio of 287hp and 274 tq (original 2003 crank ratings). I added a short-ram intake, equal-length headers and test pipes (cat delete pipes) and I put down 265 RWHP and 250 RWTQ. It was a decent mid-range torque car with a better top end around 6300 RPM's but then kinda dropped off after that when stock. With my mods the mid-range stayed about the same but I gained more up top and I could maintain pull up to about 6700 RPM's. The new M3 is like a 2-stroke motorcycle with no pull until almost 6k rpm's.
the m3 and m5 have perfect gearing for there power plants,I think the m3 has a 3.73(from memory)and a 335 has 3.08 for its massive torque band.

drive a bone stock 350z and a bone stock 335 and then go drive an m3 and you will love the power band. This video is from a modded 335,if the race started at 65 the m5 would of killed it.Even with its less torque.

an f1 car makes 900hp and less than 200 ftlbs of torque and these engines are from there f1 concepts

Break boosting maybe? There was a noticeable jump.

Big jump and about a half to full car head start. It sounded like the M5 loss traction at the beginning, which assisted in the 335i jump?

The M5 ran him down no problem.

V10 top end is no joke. No mods to a twin six will cure lack of top end speed. The little N54 just runs out of juice up top.

I can't believe why you guys are having such a hard time figuring out why the 335i got a several car length jump.

It's quite easy to see and hear.

1. 335i clearly nails the throttle before the M5 (335i driver jumped the cones a bit and the M5 driver was a touch late).

2. and more importantly you can plainly hear the M5 is in the wrong gear to start. His engine was bogging at the start, just lofting along.
He needed to be one gear lower to start.

Had he been one gear lower and the start was the same, the 335i might of gotten a tiny (1-2 CL) jump due to it's torque, but it would of been game over much sooner.

All in all, good going though. Someone now needs to go teach the M5 driver to start in the proper gear. (btw, did the 335i have a passenger too?)

Maybe its a driver issue.
IDK

But, having said that, it all depends on what the starting point is for these contests. With the completely different torque curves of these cars, at lower speeds the TT motor will have an advantage.
are you comparing a stock 335 to a new M3? If yes, then I can see what you are getting at.

any sort of tune and a 335 will jump a new M3.....torque rules in that case and the M3 simply does not have it.

I think the times the 335s have been jumped were when drivers were not brake boosting or really did not even have it in the right gear (D mode). Usually when its in DS we have seen much closer initial starts.

You got the right link - no sound to speak of. But the vid DID play NP for me.

All this talk about TQ rocking massive HP..

If you got ample HP and no TQ, then you just rev the piss out of your car, and slip the clutch...

Problem solved, you can stomp high TQ cars all day.

Just remember to replace your clutch at the end of the day... preferably with a dual or tripple if you plan on doing that all the time.

That tends to be true, but since people who OWN these highrpm motors generally don't beat on them like the car mag tests, they tend to have a little less performance in the real world.

There where no cheating from the 335i driver during the launch. The guy in the M5 say - Give the 335 a second ahead, we will ovartake him anyway. They also did, at about 260 km/h. The 335i is surpricingly strong up to this speed though.
