Can you drift an "xi"?

Has anyone tried to drift an xi (AWD) model (not on snow, but dry/wet surface)? Would appreciate if he/she can post some evidence such as a video of the same. Also, do you think its possible to drift an AWD? Is the x-drive technlogy capable of controlling and handling the car while drifting and/or BMW test-drivers tested that on the xi? (I wish BMW add such a mode on the streptronic)

WRX STi's are AWD and my friends drift it all the time, i'm sure you would be able to in an XI - but don't quote me on that.

Haven't tried it... But I'm sure there is a way... Like Darkphantom above, I've been able to get a EVO 9 Sideways... Given that it had 350WHP though... I'm sure with enough effort you could get it there...

Why don't you record yourself trying and post the results

I wouldn't mind recording myself doing it, but I would need to borrow someone's car

There's a video somewhere of me in the EVO... Though this has nothing to do with drifting an EVO, I can try to find it

You're gonna have to try real hard. I wouldn't buy an xi if drifting's on your list of things you want.

Thanks. BTW, since you have already drifted the EVO, any pointers on how one can try it on the xi?

Exactly where are you going to "attempt" this feat? If somewhere near, I'd like to come and watch

I wouldn't buy an i either, unless you are planning on buying an aftermarket LSD.

no - not really - not in the sence that drifting inplies oversteer with the throttle on. normal street AWD cars understeer under throttle.

you can oversteer it and drift by lifting the throttle - there was a cool video of Top Gear "drifting" an AWD S4 - but under lift throttle.

Not necessarily, BMW's AWD behaves in a very interesting manner. I've never thought of a safe place to try prolonged drifting, but slick winter streets (no rain yet, this is on the streets) it's very easy to kick the rear out with power application until the DSC promptly cancels the party.

Ofcoarse you can drift it, I do it sometimes around turns. Although, it quickly corrects itself even though I turn DSC/DTC completely off. Its very funwhen you do it though, you can get this car more sideways than you can with the RWD 335's.
have fun

Yes you can drift an xi! You need a bit more entry speed and a bit less respect for trail braking lol.

let's define drifting as asked by the OP. can you get an xi sideways? yes. can you do by high entry speed, trail brake and lift? yes. can you do it by a big lift off the throttle mid corner? yes. can you do it in the rain or snow with a quick flick of the steering wheel (probably also with a small lift throttle- yes. can you drift the car thru a corner with all tires sliding at a high slip angle yes.

but as far as Drifting - as in the newest motorsport of drifting- wherein you powerslide the back end using the throttle on, with the rear tires spinning, and the front wheels countersteering, and keeping the gas on as you slide the back end around a corner - NO. not in the xi and not in other modern AWD cars.

according to BMW, x-drive transfers power to the tires with the most traction - so when the rears tires start to spin x-drive transfers power away from them and to the front tires. thus no power on oversteer. almost all modern AWD street cars will understeer at the limit with the throttle on. possibly the newest excpetion is the Nissan GTR that can put like 95% of the power to the rear tires.

xDrive can send 100% of the power to either axle as well, however, the GT-R normally has about 90% of the power to the rear, where as the xDrive is like 25% Front and 75% rear.

agree - I think x-drive can even send 100% to one tire.....but its the one with traction, not the one spinning and slipping. in true drifting you need the rear tires spinning and slipping under power.
