After a clocking roughly 100kms on a cold wet day over the weekend, I woke up one morning to a belt squeal on start. Popped the bonnet and all looked fine but the squeal was deafening, but didn’t have much of a choice so drove it out for another 20kms or so.

This morning I started the car up and the squeal was gone but I was instantly thrown a battery/power fail error and knew it was to do with the serpentine/alternator belt. Inspected it and saw the belt had slipped off. I haven’t driven it out since but I’ll be sending the car for a scheduled service tomorrow, roughly 15-20kms from where I live. I’ve hooked the car up to a trickle charger this morning, so it *should* last for the drive to the mechanics, but I’m afraid of other issues like overheating if the water pump is also driven by the same belt that came loose. Should I DIY? I don’t think I have the tools nor will I know what I’m doing apart from youtubing videos, or should I wing it and drive the car straight to the mechanics tomorrow?

Hi Avex, if you're driving an N54 or N55 your water pump is electric so the missing belt won't impact it, a 15-20min drive will be fine as long as your battery is in OK nick, note that your steering will be heavy, no power steering, so take it easy

I don't know about the other e9x engines in terms of belt driven or electric water pumps though sorry

Double check the belt is not shredding check the sides are still intact on idle.

Decided not to risk it and call a mobile mechanic to come sort it out.

Good gawd I've been quoted $724.90 to replace the belt tensioner assembly, idler bearing and drive belt. Plus a call out fee. Does that sound about right?

Everywhere on the interwebs says it's the most brainless Diy, but I have neither the time nor the tools. I need the car up and running by Saturday and I can't take the day off work to muddle thru YouTube videos.

I'm in perth, can anyone recommend a more cost effective solution? (car in garage)

The tensioner is expensive if genuine.
I would've offered but you're on the other side of the country lol

ended up paying $659 excl. GST for tensioner assy, drive belt and idler bearing replaced. Mechanic refused to take cash no gst coz of warranty on parts, so was $724.90 out of pocket. I also got a service done, car purs now, but i've been told that $724 is a hefty bill to pay for an easy repair.

Glad you got this fixed.. sounds like a lot of money but tbh the cost isnt too bad, nothing like the cost of of new HPFP, valve gaskets or a number of other fixes that happen. Main thing is its fixed now, nothing worse than paying money and still having the problem

Isnt a shredded belt also associated with worn mounts? (rubs on subframe causing shredded belt)

Maybe something for you to investigate

Better get the main crank seal checked to see if any bits of belt got into ur engine. Bits can get behind the seal, make their way into the oil pan and block the oil feed to the engine causing a fatal engine failure

squeeking or squeeling generally means the belt is slipping or one of the pullies is worn out.... abnormal sounds are rarely good
