MHD vs JB4?
Hi guys (and girls)
Been out of the game for a few years. Had a 135 with N54 a couple of years ago, with a JB4. Recently got my an 335 with N55 and right away installera a JB4. But then starten reading about MHD. And want to here from you who has tried them both. Whats the difference performance vice, HP and so on? Thanx 🙂 |

It depends on your objectives and horsepower goals, but in most cases, either option can provide the power you're seeking.
MHD is a flash tune, offering more control than the JB4 since it can directly access and modify the DME tables. The JB4, on the other hand, is a highly capable piggyback system, but it doesn't have access to the DME tables as MHD does. MHD will excel in features and capability if used correctly, especially in more complicated builds. One aspect that, in my opinion, gives the JB4 an edge is the support provided by the BMS team. They are responsible for creating the piggyback system and writing all the maps, and they offer excellent support with quick responses. On the other hand, MHD is not a tuning company but rather a group of programmers who purchase their maps from third-party tuners. This can be problematic when seeking support, as they may not have the answers you need since they didn't create the map themselves.

JB4 is awesome and really paved the way for N54 tuning back in the day but flash only is the way to go in 90% of cases now. It's a safer and cleaner solution for most people. That being said, if you're not going mod crazy and just want to tune an otherwise stock car, either will do the trick just fine.

Thanks guys for the answers.
But as i understand it, they can be used togheter. Because som sort of special map that comes with MHD map pack Does that mean that i can use them boots at the same time? Use some function from mhd fore example poop and bang for the exhaust. And The JB4 to use the map i want to use. Regards Last edited by 335Ix N55 Sweden; 05-02-2023 at 05:12 PM.. |

If you want pops and bangs (ugh) just use MHD, there's no need for a JB4. MHD is a more complete and cleaner way to do it in the end as way more tables can be modified and it's not fooling anything into making more power by getting false readings. No hate for JB4, but flash only is just better for 99% of people. |

When i bought my 335i it had the jb4 installed on it. one of the things i found (specificallly my car) is that the ecu was fighting the jb4 based on the behavior of the engine. Some of the common thing would be codes thown for the throttle sensor #2 and random surges while cruising. when i witched to MHD i found the car was able to do what it wanted on management and operation with the parameters given by the tune. But i have to admit the JB4 threw you back in you seat more based on acceleration. If you really wanted to dable the MHD can work with the JB4 giving you even more tuning options, but i havent gotten to do stuff with that.

Currently have a JB4 but always get a 3166 code (Fuel Tank Ventilation Sustem Malfunction) if I'm on map 1 or 5 (which is all I use since I only have a CP). Goes away on Map 0 (bypass). From the JB4 forums, it seems some get this error and some don't. Seems to be a false alarm/nuisance fault since it self-clears when in Map 0. Others drive with it and some say a MHD backend flash (BEF) resolves it.
JB4 is great for being plug and play as well as being easily disabled. It also allows for a small degree of fine tuning but I haven't looked into it (nor care to).

Jb4 was around before mhd. New that mhd is around there's no need to use jb4 unless you're under warranty send want to be able to quickly physically remove the tune. The only reason mhd is compatible with jb4 is for people that had it before hand.

MHD seems like the way to go, still see some posts with issues after flashing, or is that "operator error". Flashing/programming has variables even at dealership levels, heard good things about MHD support.

Love my JB4. Pulls my face off on map 7. MHD feels smoother but slightly less power up top. IMHO.

I think it's operator error. A lot of the old posts I read about problems involved a USB OTG cable. With the MHD wireless adapter, the flashes are ridiculously fast and reliable. My old K-LINE 335 took under 18 minutes to do the initial flash with the newest MHD wireless adapter. Right after we flashed my friends G30 540 which uses ENET and it took less than five minutes.
