Bigger single turbo using oem manifold.
Anyone ever successfully upgraded to a bigger single turbo using the oem turbofold? I know a lot of people are doing this on the n54 side of things with some great success. I’m yet to see this done on the n55 platform other than one guy on eBay selling a lot based on the oem manifold. Furthermore, most of those stage 3 kits with the gt series turbos (gt30, gt35, gt40) are either using a custom cast manifold with larger ports or some are just reusing the oem manifold so I don’t see why a bigger maybe top mounted single wouldn’t be possible. Looking for pictures and routing on anything that will get in my way. Thanks in advance and this post wasn’t made for people to tell me it can’t be done, just looking to see if anyone has started to or successfully finished a kit based on the oem manifold.

I think all of the upgraded N55 turbos like Pure stage 2, VTT GC+, etc. use the stock manifold. If you're talking truly "big turbo" then there's a big boost kit

I guess I’m asking has anyone just cut off the oem turbo, tig welded a t3/t4 scroll style plate on and then potentially able to run just about whatever turbo they wanted, kind of like a top mounted single. I’ve taken the liberty of doing just that, cutting the oem borgwarner turbo off the manifold and it looks like I’ll have no problem in making this work. This is what the oem manifold looks like with the turbo hacked off as well as the guy on eBay selling a single turbo kit based on them oem turbofold. And no I didn’t use my table saw to do this lol It’s just sitting next to it for the picture Last edited by GearHead335i; 03-21-2023 at 03:40 PM.. |

OP yreally want a divided T4 IMO, most of the V bands used are smaller compared to a T4 as well. I would ditch the OEM turbofold unless you plan on running a 'small' turbo. Maybe you are and it will be ok.

Appreciate the diagram, deff makes things clearer on what would be the limiting factor of running oem manifold. Really I just had an extra turbo manifold from an old replacement turbo I had purchased from eBay and then stumbled across an eBay listing of a guy selling a single turbo kit for the n55 based on the oem turbofold. Still not sure if I am going to run it, more of an experiment. With that said I wouldn’t be shooting for high HP. More or less it would be a moderate setup that had so much more flexibility with what turbo one would be able to run/accessibility of said turbo/ and finally the price of a replacement turbo being much cheaper then oem. I’m going to buy a cheap t3/t4 turbo just for mock up purposes and go from there. Will keep this thread updated.

I’m actually currently reinstalling the n55 out of my e70 x5 35i and have upgraded the turbo with a hybrid turbo. It’s a new chra with a 53/68mm compressor wheel so it has a custom bored out compressor housing with “clipped” turbine wheel blades, as well as a custom inlet I am in the process of finishing up!
