The most offensive BMW drivers
Recently I went on my first BMW CCA event, a Spring Drive. By and large, it was a great time and I learned about a few amazing curvy roads near my home. I was a little uncertain about going, just in case there were some "insecure overachievers" amongst the group.
Sadly, from the very beginning of the drive, I could instantly see who the a$$holes would be. Here are the three incidents, all with the same vehicle type. I will let you all guess what vehicle type I am referring to. 1) A red specimen, tailing me constantly despite there being 20 BMWs in front of me. Literally maybe 15 feet off my rear bumper. I would be in the left lane, it was on my bumper. I'd floor it and take off, it'd chase after...then be on my bumper. After getting sick of being tailed (what if I saw a cop and slammed on the brakes?), I moved to the right lane. It immediately followed and tailed me in the right lane, despite no traffic in the left lane. Then we got to the curvy section and those who know me, know I love curves. I don't consider myself Schumacher or anything near it, but I can hold my own. If someone is keeping up with me hard on the corners, then I know they are fast and will NOT floor it on the straightways so that they can pass. I expect the same out of others. In our curvy section, the following transpired: 2) A group of 4 of us broke from the pack. The "A" group took off and their speed through the curves astounded me. A fellow in a 330 embarrassed the M series. Goes to show the difference driver skill makes. An 1998 model year specimen was leading our 4pack. He was going reasonably fast and tailed by a pair of 2004'ish model year specimens, both right on his ass through the turns. Mr. 1998 was flooring it on the straights, however and no one could get by him safely. 3) One of the 2004 specimens, complete with add on front lip, etc. I was tailing him hard on the curves. He would try to floor it on the straights, but ahem, 390 ft. lbs is hard to escape. I would have to BRAKE mid-curve because he was so slow in the twisties. This specimen would not let me pass either and would speed up in the straights. Unable to pull away from me, he proceded to swerve outside of the "tracks" and kick dirt and gravel up at me. The swerving, of course, made it impossible to pass. By no means do I believe that all drivers of this type of vehicle are like this. In fact, the 4th vehicle in our 4pack was a 2005 model and did not tailgate and let others pass when they proved to be faster in the curves. I now, without a doubt, understand why non-BMW drivers think we are arrogant, self-centered a$$holes. ***Rant Over**** |

Pricks on the inside.... as that tired joke goes. I'd have behaved just as you did, from what I gathered from your post..... semi-cautiously, with a defensive mindset, and a spirited attitude. You're in the new "fast 3", and it will be a magnet for anyone with a modded anything-bimmer. I've not experienced the concentration of ego that these events must attract, but the number e36/46 M3's and ambitious or modded sub-M's that solicit a race on my daily commute home is astounding. It's almost always bimmers that even notice my car, save for the occasional ZVQ or american muscle. Ignore, and drive as you would normally is my only advice. Must be hard under such circumstances, but this situation is a hair from death if you start playing with a 18yr old in a S/C 328 who's certain that he has his own modded version physics in play.
BTW, the most offenive BMW owner EVAR is ///M_owns_you, and he's "banned" and sitting on crumpled iForged blocks for the time being, so that rules one turd out of the line up of likely perps. |

It kind of surprises me that you'd get people like this at a CCA meet. Edgarj is dead on in regards to 335's being a target though. He might remember me mentioning this, but on my way down to Vancouver (WA) last weekend for a procede/dyno day, I had an e90 328 messing with me for at least half of my 100 mile drive. I have nothing at all against 328's (I like pretty much all bimmers), but this guy would not leave me alone. He would tail me within 15 feet in the left lane. When I moved over, he would follow and continue to tail. I'd get pissed after awhile, and take off, getting up to 130-140 mph, leaving this guy behind. After getting back to normal speed (70-75), he would catch up going about 90, then tuck in behind me again. I finally said screw it, took an exit, and had a cup of coffee. I get this kind of stuff all the time, from a variety of cars. I think it's better to just relax and accept it. Or at least do a better job then I did. Maybe it's a compliment to the cars we drive.

Why are you guys trying to pass one another around turns on public roads to begin with? Maybe i'm missing something here.

After sharing the road with my fellow humans for some four decades, I have formulated a couple theories. #1: Following distance is proportional to IQ. #2: The use of a turn signal is a reflection of one's character. I don't know if they apply to a BMW CCA event though.

Having someone on your ass in a corner is an indication that they are faster than you. in that instance, you should ease up on the straights, so others can get by. We pass on the straights - if the other guy doesn't accelerate to block your pass, which the prick drivers would. |

I made a post last fall on this subject of how much unwanted attention the 335i gets on the road. We are targets for anyone who has any ideal how well the 335i performs.
I had another incident last night with my family in the car. We were coming home from a soccer tournament and this guy in a brand new GTO, and I think it had a manual since the way it hopped every time it shift. Anyway, the guy cut me off entering the freeway ramp, it was one of those really nicely curved and banked ramps entering the freeway. He takes off down the ramp, which got the best of me so I followed. Needless to say I had no problem keeping up with him down the ramp, but notice the GTO sliding out in the curve. When we exited the ramp we were doing 80 with me right on his tail. We hit the highway, with little traffic and went a little way and I was about to make my move into the fast lane and realize someone was come up fast in the fast lane so I backed off, just as I did this, the GTO guy was too busy watching me in the his rear view mirror then realize he was about to slam into the mini copper i front of him. He locks it up and I hit the brake and slowed down way faster than him and at that point down shifted swung out and passed him before he knew it. So a$$wipes drive all sort of cars. and what worse they drive cars without knowing how the car performs. Last edited by Maestro; 05-15-2007 at 08:33 AM.. |

It's just common courtesy, people need to move over (just like those people I occasionally meet in the left lane that refuse to yield).

I wish I lived in your geographic areas, because I have a Procede in my 335i and no one has made a move at me! No fun.

Some M3 owners seem to have a difficult time accepting that a plain jane 335 with a few subtle mods is faster in some conditions... Most of the Porsche owners around my neck of the woods play the 'I'm too far above you to condescend to race such a lowly vehicle' game except for the occasional young turk in his mom's 911, and they are scary to play with because they often do not have a clue how to drive.

It appears that you all have guessed the offending vehicles: M3
I guess it makes sense. You are the top of the bottom (eg entry level luxury), so you feel very compelled to defend the hell out of yourself. Personally I'd be embarrassed to drive a souped up M3 complete with rice gear - and end up being slower than a stock 330i in the curves. |

Damnit, I have ignored Terry. I can't see what he writes but all I know is that it clutters up my threads.
Can I ban him from threads that I start? Anyone? |

Second, I think I have a solution to everyone's problem, just do what I did, get a failed fuel pump so you can get into a 325 loaner, and suddenly, "poof" no more target for 6 weeks, and everyone just ignores you |

Maybe i'm missing something, but I haven't seen these racers around in a long time. I had a e36 m3 prior to the 335xi and even then I saw just one guy in a turbo civic trying to race me (yeah he was faster).
Most people think i'm military or police - just by my looks and demeanor, maybe that discourages them when they look over to see who's driving. I'd think i'd still run into these people, i know they are all over the place in MD and DC. 5.7 0-60 is underrated. My e36 m3 was rated at something like that, this 335i is much faster...i'd guess high 4's or so. So that GTO was very outclassed...plus its a domestic, I dislike all domestic cars - i'm American, love America...but hate American cars . |

The GTO was fast, and maybe it was a 6.0, but then again anyone can jump ahead when the other person is not aware of the other guys intention.
Also, once ahead on the ramp it hard to pass, I know he was having problem doing 50+ on the ramp and I was very comfortable coming out of the curve. Once on the flat, you can tell he was topped out at about 80 did not have much acceleration left. Then again I was trying be safe so I did not really push it. Ok, i just realize I took this and hijacked this thread |

next time, go last. That way you can let everyone have their ego trip and you stay behind and give yourself some distant before the curve and let it fly.
