I wonder what makes it "OEM". If two injectors come off the exact same assembly line, and one goes to SMP, and the other goes to BMW in an OEM box stamped with a BMW part#, is the latter an "OEM" part while the other is not? I think that is the situation here, and the situation in general.

I find it hard to believe that the SMP and OEM injectors are different at all, considering they look identical, have identical markings, came from the same country, etc. I'm guessing they came out of the same factory, but maybe the OEM one has slightly higher testing standards?

Some people say they are the same, some say they aren't. The truth is that no one knows for sure. There are probably only a few people on the planet that know for sure, and those are the people that are making them or that are buying them from the factory.

Even if they aren't as good as OEM, they are still almost 1/2 the price. So even if you had to replace them twice as often, you'd still be breaking even.

When ordering from RockAuto, do they come with decoupling rings or the seals?

Can either be reused from the existing injectors?

They do not, and no, you cannot/should not reuse the decouplers. I ordered mine from ECS tuning.

The ones from Rock Auto are OEM. They even come with the Roundel stamped on them.

I'm not even sure if there are any non OEM versions of these injectors available. It seems the OEM had so much trouble getting them right, it would be pretty hard for a 3rd party to make them.

As others have mentioned, they might be "binned" parts. They might fail the OEM standard by a %. Siemens or whatever bins these as non-OEM and instead of taking a total loss and junking them, they take the best and sell them to other distributors and then are free from any obligations to BMW.

LCD screens are similar, Sharp or Samsung plant has A and B and C stock, A stock goes to Apple for their high end displays while B stock goes to lower and C to the really low stuff (like grey market).

This even happens within chip foundries; The highest spec GPU are the ones where every gate/path tests perfect, the ones that fail they disable the gates and sell as a lower end model at a reduced frequency.

Back in the day I recall flashing a high-end firmware onto a lower end card and voila, I had the high end one, just wasn't able to overclock it like a "real" one.

Interesting, I do not know if that is the case.

I will say that I believe BMW usually takes their emblem off of parts that they do this with. I have ordered some parts that were listed as the OEM manufacturer and you could see they sanded the roundel off of the parts.

Someone should do some investigating and find the factory that makes these and see what they say.

No way BMW would allow flawed or out of spec products to hit the market with their logo on them.

I emailed RockAuto and they said they cannot guarantee which index injector they will send you. So basically it's a gamble. You're lucky all of yours were the same at least.

I have a faulty injector on cylinder 6. What is your take on replacing 3 on the same bank, rather than having to replace all?

Standard practice is just to replace the bank.
If your game just replace one.

Good to hear. I'm in CA too so I bet mine will come from the same warehouse as yours and probably with the -12 index.

Question... lets say I get four -12 and two -11 injectors. Can I mix them or do I need to send them back and make sure I get them all with the same index?

You can mix 11 and 12, they are both gen 2 injectors.

Did they come with the sealing rings / o-rings on the tips?

Good to hear everyone is getting batches of the new Index 12 ones in. I guess their past inventory isn't the same as current/future inventory and I have been proven wrong. Seems like a good source for injectors at a fraction of prices found elsewhere (ebay, dealership, wholesale, etc)

Hey, you guys stop rubbing your -12 scores from RockAuto in my face.

I guess I was the only unlucky one.

I doubt there is any notable difference between them. I bet they are going to run out soon!

Did yours come with the seals on the tips or do we need to buy seals?

Probably not. They come with the seal rings, but you will need to order decoupling elements. I got them from ECS.
