I don't know what you call it but when I approach a stop sign and come to a stop, as I step on the gas to get going again, I have to wait a couple of seconds to press on the gas to go. If I gas too soon, the car doesn't feel like it's in the right gear and it kinda roars like I'm in the wrong gear, but eventually after a few seconds it feels fine. Happens at every stop or redlight or when I slow down but start going right away.

the dealer said it's normal and there's nothing they can do about it.

Anyone else experience this and is this normal?

if a dealer ever spits out the phrase "its normal" ... take a crap on the middle of his showroom floor, look him in the eyes and go "dont worry, its just a bowel movement, its normal" then calmly walk out

I thought it was turbo lag but I just couldn't explain it enough. I've reading through the stickied thread and found this: http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/b240308g.htm and I think this is what it's happening.

Arghh! Stupid dealers, I hate to have to give him the solution. I guess I'll have to print this SIB and give it to him. I've done this in the past for my wife's e60.

I've noticed a feeling like this when I'm driving a loaner with an AT. It seems like you get on the gas and the engine spins up for a couple seconds then the tranny catches suddenly. Makes it hard to drive smoothly. Do you have an AT? Try using the paddles to shift through the first couple of gears, that seemed to help me.

I dont think its the turbo lag since it only happens when u come to a stop and then go. But for sure it aint normal if u said the car wont go for a few seconds. If its like less than 1 sec, then i think its normal cuz the tranny probably was trying to change gear.

Didn't see if you have an AT. If so, that's happened to me and since my ECU was updated never again. I think alot of people with older 335's and AT's have experienced that. Have you had the software updated? It would fix that problem but also change other parameters of how your car drives..

I do have an automatic. it's early 07 build. I know I have turbo lag (confirmed by doing the test when on 4th gear at 1500 rpm). I just didn't know what to call what happens here at the stop sign.

Mooreski explained it well. feels like engine is just spinning and then it the tranny catches it and it makes it jolt. If I'm on steptronic or DS, it runs fine. So higher revs usually are fine.

I think I had my software updated when I had them activate my alarm that I installed myself. But not sure what version it's running. It is quite annoying and sometimes I feel like I don't know how to drive my own car.

Unfortunately you have to show your dealer the SIB bulletin to get them to take an action.

You figured it out, that's more then have the battle.

These cars also have a brake assist feature which seems to hold your brakes on even if you let go of the brake pedal...........I guess to help control creeping. I wonder if something is playing up there.
Sometimes whilst parking in my garage as you engage your brakes, I notice it kick in as I'll try to creep slowly near the front wall. Makes it difficult to brake/creep forward smoothly, as the car starts to jerk forward. Feels like sticky brakes.

If you had the software updated prior to that SIB, it'll need to be updated again. The lag will be reduced and it'll run/shift smoother. Talk to the shop foreman if the SA doesn't know what the hell you're talking about.

Sounds like typical slushbox behavior as it sorts out whether to kick down. But what do I know, I don't buy ATs.

I have a 08 335Xi AT. I think I have that same problem at stops but ive never had turbo before. Actually never had a car worth mentioning until now. I thought maybe it was normal. It delays at stops for maybe half a second then takes off like crazy. Should this car off the line once stopped and floored take off instantly like a rocket or are we being a little picky? I will bring this up to the SA today.

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner! This is what the OP is experiencing, The brake or take off assist, not turbo lag. My car does the same thing from time to time. I release the brake pedal and depress the gas and you can still feel the brake holding the car back and then it releases..

You are being a little picky, I think people are throwing around the turbo lag issue a little too often.

It's the NIC (Neutral Idle Control). The fact that it doesn't ever happen in DS or step confirms this.

If you're stopped for a while at a light, the car shifts into Neutral. This is for consumption and emissions purposes. Then, when it senses you lightening up on the pedal, it shifts into gear. This can cause lurches with foot still on pedal. It can also do just as the OP described above, and delay then jerk forward when taking off.

There is an SIB on it, too lazy to see if it was the one posted above, but my SA was very aware, and more than willing to disable it. Problem solved.

Thanks! I think you are right. Or there might be a combination with the brakes as well. So I'll have them check this first and if it still happens, I'll have them check the brakes.

Here's the SIB from the link above:

**************************

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B24 03 08 dated January 2009.

designates changes to this revision

SUBJECT
E9x, E6x with 6HP19TU - Jolt and Delay when Pulling Away

MODEL
E90, E92, E93 (335i) with N54 and 6HP19TU from 03/07 up to 06/09

E60, E61 (535i) with N54 and 6HP19TU from 03/07 up to 09/09

E60 (528i) with N52K and 6HP19TU from 03/07 up 09/09

SITUATION
The customer may complain of a delayed engagement and a harsh jolt when accelerating from a stop.

The situation occurs only during the engine warm-up phase (cold engine), and cannot be reproduced in the Sport Mode
.

CAUSE
EGS software - unfavorable NIC calibration.

The NIC (Neutral Idle Control) function disengages the torque converter from the transmission when the vehicle is stationary in the Drive position; the service brakes are applied; and the engine is still in the warm-up phase.

SOLUTION
Check the vehicle's integration level.

If the integration level is:

* On E9x vehicles - E89x-09-03-520 or lower

Reprogram and recode the complete vehicle with a current ISTA/P version (target integration level E89x-09-06-510). The updated EGS software, which completely removes the NIC function, was introduced in ISTA/P 34.0.

* On E60/E61 N54 vehicles - E060-07-09-530 or lower

* On E60 N52K vehicles – E060-08-03-550 or lower

Reprogram and recode the complete vehicle with a current ISTA/P version (target integration level E060-08-09-520 or higher).
