Yes I know I can get low dust pads, but until then, what are the best products for removing and then mitigating the build up of brake dust? I'm looking for a spray that can go on the wheels, sit for X minutes, then get rinsed off. Does this exist?

Also looking for products that can coat the wheels like a wax and make the dust easier to clean off the next time.

They obviously need to be safe for the powder coating on the wheels and calipers and safe on car paint as well.

Best Bang for the Buck = Meguiar's Wheel Brightener.

I use this with other Meguiar's detailing line products and the gallon will last you for years.

For light dust, I use Meguiars Wheel/Tire Non-Acid cleaner.

Any dedicated wheel cleaner should do the trick, Megs Wheel Brightner (D140) is a great product but, its acid based and very strong, if you go that route depending on the level of grime I would dilute it down first. Or go with a consumer level product like Hot Rims which is acid based but much gentler than D140 and you can find it at you local auto parts store.

For protection once you get them cleaned up you could go with a spray and rinse sealant like McKees 37 Hydro-Blue or CarPro HydrO2 Lite....easy peasy application and works pretty well...clearly coating them would be best option but save that job for when/if you change the pads since you have to remove the wheels......

If you have some seriously nasty wheels, then Wheel brightener is an awesome product. I used to use it diluted 5:1 as my maintenance wheel cleaner... until it started etching and corroding my hubs and brakes. If I have a need to use it the wheels come off the car.

Now I use the Meg's non-acid cleaner. I dilute it 3:1 (which means you get three gallons for about $15) and there isn't much it won't clean.

For sealing the wheels, I like to use either the McKee's 37 or Cquartz SiO2 products. You just spritz onto a wet wheel and spray it off. Works quite well and very little effort.

I've heard and seen good things surprisingly from Eagle one triple action foam. Came across it from Dallas Paint Correction on YouTube. Sells for around $6 at autozone. I'll be trying it next to give it a shot.

I think you're thinking of SONAX Wheel Cleaner Plus.

Must say Wheel Cleaner Plus and Not "SONAX Wheel Cleaner full effect". Full effects is junk.

BMW original cleaner was "redesigned" and they modified their formula and has this same effect now, and it works amazing. Smells a lot like IronX

However now days a lot of companies are jumping on this train that has cleaners that change color when they come in contact with metallic particles.

A few of them available now.... Sonnax is probably most popular. Griot's has a product that does the same. Tried them all and personally can't get over the cost. Once you use something that works just as well at $5 per gallon it's very hard to justify something else at $100/gallon, even if it changes colors and smells horrific.

Same stuff as the Meg's detailing line non-acid wheel cleaner. The difference being you can easily find it at most retail stores. The downside is you pay $6 per 22 oz. bottle buying Hot Rims, which works out to about $35 per gallon.

+1 on this. I've used both Sonax products, and this is definitely on par with them. Great bang for your buck

I've been using Brown Royal and it does a great job, but this SONAX sounds interesting. Anyone here also tried the Brown Royal to give a comparison?

Also, is it better if you do physical cleaning or does it really remove most everything without having to wipe/brush? If cleaning is required, is there a good tool that works well on all the nooks/crannies in the BMW rims?

I used the Meguiars Hot Rims after seeing the suggestion here last week, and because it was on sale for $4. It's amazing. In addition to brake dust, I have what I though were permanent black stains on my wheels from the previous owner never washing them, that no amount of simple green and scrubbing could remove. One application of Hot Rims made it better, but after a second treatment this black crud is almost gone completely! I'm really impressed with this stuff, especially for how cheap it is. (not a shill for meguiars products, I actually want to try Sonnax but this stuff was available immediately for me)

Thanks for the feedback - I might have to try this as it would be much cheaper than the Brown Royal, too. I have a collector car that has some staining on the rims that never seemed to come off, so maybe it will work for that too.
