Lifter noise loud enough to hear inside the car?
I like to leave the window open whenever I can since I like natural wind.
It wasn't that bad when I got the car couple years ago (just loud when you open the hood) Now I can hear it if I just crack my sunroof open when I drive around in the city During the day (meaning there are many other noises) I will have to admit that I hadn't changed the oil for 1 1/2 year. I did engine flush plus threw liqui moly ceratec. But it didn't help. (I know you have to drive fast sometimes but I still notice it after long highway drive) It's embarrassing to hear such sounds when I have a girl next to me since it sounds like car is running like 1992 honda civic. Do you think late oil changed did the permanent damage to the lifter? |

Type and brand of oil can cause noise; as well of late oil changes. I find it more important to change your oil with mileage not time.. For example if you drove 5000 miles in a year and a half i wouldnt worry about any damage but if you drove 25k miles in the year and a half i would be cautious.
Anyways get some 5w30 Mobile One Full Synthetic oil and see if she quits down.. https://www.mobil.com/en/lubricants/...mobil-1-5w-30/ |

My 1998 civic was definitely not as loud as some of these ticking n52s
What oil are you using |

Brake squeal when cold was also much better on my ‘97 Civic than on my ‘17 340. Fortunately my e90’s brakes have been pretty quiet...

haha nice try trying to diss Hondas. Honda have adjustable valve tappets . I usually adjust the intake to .007 and exhaust to .008-009. You cant even hear the engine running, the only ticking i ever hear from the engine bay is the fuel injectors. bimmers have non adjustable hydraulic lifters so when they go bad it will tick.

No one is dissing Honda—the opposite, actually. We’re saying our old Civics had less lifter tick than our N52 e90’s.

I never actually got around to adjust the valves on that car. If the n52 were to have adjustable tappets it'd be the vein of this cars existence. The valve cover isn't anywhere near as easy to remove as a Honda.

marvel mystery oil is mineral oil with some solvents in it.
it does not belong in a modern engine's crankcase for any length of time. it's good for tractors from the 50s and air tools. like I said. liquimoly 5-40 and the hydraulic valve additive is the only thing that has worked to quiet mine, and I've tried a half dozen different performance oils trying too. |

N52? Yeah, I hate the tick too. Mine came back after going away for 30k.
Take a few long drives, an hour or so, at a stable highway speed. Travel somewhere. That should clear it up for a long time. Switching up your oil won't really make a difference.

My wife's N52 ticks like crazy if it sits for a couple few weeks. I'll let it warm up, still ticking like crazy, then while in park run it up to ~3000rpm and hold it there for a good 60 seconds or so. Might have to do it more than once, but I've never had it not stop the ticking. Just gotta get those hydraulic lifters pumped back full of oil, idling and/or regular driving ain't gonna do it.

I opened valve cover to replace the gasket.
I noticed those parts (sits on top of the spring) has little play (maybe 1mm) Sideways and it creates ticking sound? Its it supposed to be loose like that? This is the part I am talking about. Plus is there a way to examine Valve Lifter? I am thinking if I should ask someone to replace lifter related parts before I put the cover back on since there is no way I can do this job on my own. https://www.ebay.com/i/363151057311?...xoCi2IQAvD_BwE |
