Indy shop over charging or seems right?
So I went to get my crankshaft sensor replaced they said it will be 1.8 hours. They called me back and said it will be an additional 2 hours and trying to charge $300. They said there are 2 different models of the N54 engine and they will have to remove the intake manifold??
I seen a DIY to change crankshaft sensor. On the forum he said do not take out the intake manifold. Does that seem right from the Indy shop or are they over charging?

The "book" might say to remove the manifold, if it's possible to do a good Indy who specializes in a particular model would charge actual time, others will charge book time at a more reasonable rate than a dealer. Is either overcharging?

2 different models of the n54... YA and I've got the other one, everything at least is located in the same spots haha.
Find a new indy from that alone. Soon after I first purchased my car, had an reputable Dallas indy try and tell me my car was single turbo cuz it's an '11. Say no its an iS with the n54, no thanks for your services. After that I've done all my own diy

Additionally form pelicanparts.com "For all-wheel drive models, remove the intake manifold to access the sensor, access from below is difficult. With the intake manifold removed, you will have clear access to the sensor." https://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tec...eplacement.htm Good luck Last edited by Wolf 335; 10-19-2018 at 12:08 PM.. |

I agree with the infantry devil-dog, get a new tech or do it yourself! Doesn't sound like they know what they're talking about.

looks pretty straight foreword , I always think it looks difficult till I do it, sometimes it gets a bit more then I expected but you will get it done. Jump in the waters fine.

Plus you can always ask around, if you live in or near a populated area there is always one or two fellow posters who would come over and lend a helping hand!

the intake manifold is not 2 hours worth of work to take off.
my brother and I walnut blasted his valves and the whole job took less than 3. I'd say it takes an hour for removal/install of the manifold alone. regardless, they should have quoted the right amount of labor at the outset. |

I changed my crankshaft sensor a couple months ago. It is a 30 minute job and the intake manifold doesn't have to come off, at least on my '08 335i.

Thanks for your guys feedback! I changed it myself took me maybe 1-2 hours only because the bolt feel couple times lol. For now on I will diy it myself! tired of this shop always coming up with excuses or the wrong quotes. I replaced my lpfp, they said I had a code for 2AAF but now I'm thinking it could of been faulty code because of my bad crankshaft sensor. After replacing the crankshaft yesterday all the lights are gone and car has been driving great finally!
I feel the shop just wants more money or doesn't know what to do with BMW. I told them just to replace the crankshaft sensor alone, they said it's better to get the fuel pump and do it all at once. So I waited for the fuel pump to come in just for them to say it will be additional 2 hours to remove the intake manifold 🤦🏻*♂️I said just replace the fuel pump and it didn't fix the light this was on Thursday. I replaced the crankshaft yesterday it fixed the lights popping up and limp mode. Never ever trusting the shop again Thank you all to replying u really changed my view of this shop for now on I will do it myself! Feel better when I accomplished it also!

Congrats on fixing it yourself. I think that I'd post feedback on a public forum like Yelp and warn others about their business practices.

One of my Indy’s (I use Active Autowerke’s and a member on here) charged me $50 parts/labor as he had a spare one laying around. Glad you were able to change it out yourself OP, though was the $300 quote just for labor or did it include the part?

That was just the labor $75 an hour for 4 hours, I already bought the crankshaft from bmw dealership for $190 for the sensor and o ring and new bolt.
