BMW warranty question

Hi all

A question for those of you who have had experience with BMW extended warranty. Since I got the car just under 2 years ago I was always thinking of buying the comprehensive bmw warranty but held off in the hope that things would be 'ok' - wishful thinking one could say as I've spent a fair bit on maintenance thus far. No complaints as I knew this was the territory that comes with 335i's - pay to play. Currently the car is at 74k miles.

For peace of mind going forward, I'm now considering the warranty going forward but I've got a few questions. During my ownership I've always had the car looked after by a BMW specialist who only uses authentic parts from the local bmw dealership. And I have receipts for all the work during my ownership. The previous owner had lost the paperwork but has the service history book filled and it's a mix of approved Bmw to begin with to Indy shops prior to my purchase however he did give me a few bits of paperwork the first two owners had received - approved bmw receipts & investigations.

I'm happy to pay the cost & excess but I'm wondering if the lack of paperwork for work prior to ownership might be a problem in the event of a claim?

Also, I'm going to return the car to stock on MHD - and only use the MHD to read codes etc, with the limited capabilities it has. Would this have any implications? If it infringes the warranty I'll probably not go ahead with it but I'm just seeing if I could pay that monthly and have the peace of mind rather than waiting for something to go wrong and pick up the bill.

Cheers

I have claimed on the bmw extended warranty 4/5 times and to date they haven't checked the cars service history. Their policy is however that the warranty is only valid if the vehicle has been serviced at bmw OR a bmw approved workshop. With regards to mhd I would say it is highly unlikely that they will pick it up - unless the engine blows and they are trying desperately to get out of an expensive warranty claim. My car has a modified exhaust, charge pipe w bov, and evolve stage 1 remap and they haven't raised any eyebrows. If you were to take it to a bmw dealership and they kicked up a fuss you could always try another dealership and hope they're not as scrupulous.... basically it's your call - If the service history is not up to scratch id consider it carefully as this is very easy for them to check however I wouldn't worry about mhd.. hope this helps in some way !

Oh wow I'm surprised that they're ok with all the mods! I was under the impression they generally avoid having to fork out on claims and mods that would place extra stress upon engine components (in their view) would allow them to shift the blame on!

Interesting to know

With regards to my e92, the service history is all intact and the car is regularly serviced - stamps & all. First few were done at the dealership by the original owner and in between at authorised & Indys. I've serviced twice during my ownership at an independent BMW specialist & had the AC recall done with the local BMW dealership where they did an inspection just as part of the whole visit.

Do you reckon my service history would be 'up to scratch?'

In fairness I've been through 2 stock charge pipes so I was up for a fight if they had any issues with me upgrading what is a heavily flawed component... they didn't detect the remap but the exhaust is much louder than stock and they didn't mention that either. The best thing to do is give them a call and discuss the service history with them - I can only see them having an issue with the independent services if they aren't bmw approved workshops

Personally, being that warranty on a car with more than 60k miles is what £700, plus an excess of £250, that means you need £1k of repairs per annum to break even. Turbos are £1200 or so to replace these days at PMP cars ... plus if you have BMW warranty, you have to use BMW.

I think id rather my 3 month old daughter work on my car tbh.

You DON'T have to have an main BMW dealer service history to maintain the warranty. As long as OEM parts have been used, along with the correct spec oil/fluids etc. and all at a VAT registered garage, you're ok.

No need to have it serviced at a bmw garage, however, it needs to have been serviced at a VAT registered garage and have the service book stamped. Although it helps to build a relationship with the dealer so they will fight your corner. I have had quite a bit of work through the warranty, including a new gearbox and catalytic converters. It's only these big jobs they question the one independent stamp I have which I back up with a receipt. They have paid out for all reasonable things you would expect to be covered, including oil leaks, so it's worth it. Just make sure the service history is in order.

I've owned my 35i for 8 years now, when I first bought it I considered a Bmw warranty. Car had done 52,000 miles & I think the warranty was just under £600 but I decided not to go for it.
If I had have taken the warranty it would have cost me slightly more in increasing premiums & excesses than I've had to spend in repairs, although you can spread the cost of the warranty over a year. So if you don't have deep pockets maybe the warranty would work out better.

At 74k it's going to need ofhg, sump & valve cover gaskets, most likely a water pump, hpfp if it hasn't been replaced already. My 35 started to suffer from Westgate rattle around 85k & the tubs had to be replaced at 106k.

Yeah the car is creeping up on 75k miles and I can imagine the maintenance will be increasing as expected

I've just bought my first house so I just thought spreading it over the length of a year might be a better way to go about the maintenance.

Only thing is that at £100 a month is quite a bit which does add up to £1200 yearly without the £100 excess for each time a claim is made

And if only say one thing goes over the next 3-4000 miles I do per year, then it's a whole waste of money

Turbos refurbishment I've enquired at PMP £990

Im wondering what the costs for parts & labour for HPFP & water pump are like plus any other parts likely to fail after 75k
