EGR Cooler Spring
Add me to the list of broken EGR Cooler springs. I got the dreaded service engine soon light and I pulled the code indicating EGR temp plausibility.
Reached down to the linkage and sure enough it was moving left and right and not moving back to the left - spring broken. I fashioned a "bush fix" by putting an external spring on the linkage until I get a replacement. Unfortunately I need to reset the codes and put some miles on so it passes readiness test and I can get inspected (already a couple of weeks late - I am in NJ). Anyone with a good used cooler laying around they want to sell? Please PM me. |

Thanks for the responses. I am surprised that FB is the place to go in this situation. At the risk of being labeled a Luddite, I will confess that I don't have a FB account (I won't bore you with my thoughts that a man of a certain age should not have any use for FB).
What is the advantage folks are finding on a FB group over a forum like this one??? I am getting old. |

I don't have a FB account either so I can't comment. But I can say that I've been running an ace hardware spring and zip tie fix for at least 20k miles with nary an issue. Your bush fix is likely equally robust.

I moderate the Facebook group and am biased. I will say that while e90post is great for DIY guides and going back to reference posts, Facebook is much more efficient for educating the masses. A lot of my facebook comments are just links here to e90post |

Gutwrenching to see what that recent hailstorm did to his car. I told him to send it and just rock it as is, dimples and all.

BTW, when my EGR cooler return valve broke, it was rusted. I suspect that it bind to itself and broke.
On my new EGR cooler, I coated the spring with a thick layer of grease, hoping that will inhibit the rust and breaking again. |

I have a partially hacked upon cooler. I was attempting to remove spring for another guy just like OP. I believe I determined that you can’t transplant one. It appears that the spring is captured by the welded on keeper. I could be wrong. I mean I can easily get Drexel out and cut that other part out to release the spring. It just isn’t clear how OP will reinstall.
Willing to listen and learn though. My cooler wouldn’t be a good candidate for replacent as I have cut both inlet and outlet flanges off. I think I cut the water spigots off too. I immitated the spigots when I did a SS water bypass line. Covered here a few years back. My spigots have same nipple but had male pipe threads on back side. I found a spring laying around my basement; 3 to 4 inches long and about a quarter inch in diameter and lots of coils. It easily stretched a couple of inches.
After removing the air snorkel and air filter box to get a little access (I did not loosen or remove the ERG Cooler) I threaded a small zip tie through the vacuum linkage on the EGR Cooler valve shaft with the broken spring as well as one end of the "auxiliary" spring. The other end of the "auxiliary" spring I zip tied laterally (due left looking at the cooler from the front of the car) to a rigid pipe/hose (I believe it is an AC hose but don't quote me). My "auxiliary" spring pulls the valve left to the closed position and the vacuum pot on the cooler pulls the valve right. It was not real easy to thread the zip tie without removing the cooler but I was able to do it with help of a couple of hemostats I keep in my toolbox. The fix has held up the last couple of weeks and I don't anticipate any problems. About the only thing that can happen would be the melting of the zip ties. It ain't pretty (although you cannot really see any of it with the air box back on) but it will get me through inspection. Last edited by 335dwanted; 03-30-2018 at 12:15 PM.. Reason: typo |

The spring on my EGR cooler just broke and I need a quick fix. Possible for you to PM me on how you fixed it with the spring and zip tie? I realize that's not a permanent fix... just looking for a temp solution while I weigh other options.

It's a sacrificial metal to steel/iron/aluminum which I use at work in very moist locations. Last edited by robnitro; 07-14-2018 at 10:09 PM.. |

I got my 335D at 84k. I drove only 86k, already I replaced Mass Air Sensor and now EGR Cooler Issue. I dont know what other repairs I would be encountering. I thought 335D is good until 120k.
