Most auto stores will either have a K&N filter in stock or can order it for you. Why not just do that?

I would get the Helene Streamline SE filter from Helene Performance. I researched and found this to be the most praised.

I thought they went out of business. But BMC is still available.

I have a BMC drop in panel filter that is in absolutely brand new condition. If you listen closely you can even hear the turbo,s spooling up slightly. Its the first mod i did to my car when i bought it,but only had it in for around 300 miles before i decided to go with the BMS intake.I really dont have plans to sell it in case i ever have to put the stock air box on for whatever reason. But if i have to do that i still have the factory filter that looks as new as the day i picked up the car.My point is that i highly recommend the BMC drop in.I paid 85.00 for it in a group buy.If i did decide to sell it,i wouldnt take a penny less than 65.00.Good luck in your decision.

I have the K&N filter, in the original box still. Only has about 100 miles on it.

I know you run a stock airbox. Did you go back to the stock filter, or are you running a different drop in?

No, I put the K&N in, did about 14 back to back runs, installing, and then removing the element. Didn't make any difference for me. At first I put it in, and thought wow, I gained 1/2 mph! But then I put in the stock air filter, and the speed didn't go back down. In fact, my highest speed was with the stock air filter. So I just figured if the stock non-oiled air filter was just as good, I would stick with that.

Did they? I didn't know that they went out of business.
I have the Helene and I'm a strong believer in their company.
It has higher flow than the OEM and just as good of filtration.

Other companies mainly focus on the flow and not the filtration.

EDIT

Wow! I just did a search and their web site is no longer.

Look into the Macht Schnell filters for the N54 engines:

Macht Schnell - N54B30 High Performance Panel Filter

This was one of the first mods we performed on our 1-series project, before switching to a DCI setup.

100% correct. Here's an article we did on the e46 M3 filter:

Most gotton-gauze filters will share the same characteristics - cotton, oil, mesh and rubber/polyurethane construction. The MS54B32 goes a bit further. We'll start with pleat depth.

Pleat Depth

The MS54B32 filters are made up from an 8-layer construction with an approximate 1.5" pleat depth. As reference, K&N & aFe's depth measurement is only about 0.75". Pleat count & depth play very important roles in filtration - while providing maximum airflow, in a safe and efficient manner.

Layers

The Macht Schnell MS54B32 are an 8-layer construction, twice as many cotton piles as K&N and aFe. This allows more filtering and greater oil saturation for dust collection.

Wicking

An important factor not really talked about in the past is the bleed area or "wicking". This is the urethane bleed that is soaked up by the gauze, reducing the surface area of the filter and limiting airflow:

Here's an example of poor wicking on a popular panel-type filter:

The Macht Schnell MS54B32 filters have very little bleed, keeping the wick area to a minimum and permitting maximum airflow:

The MS54B32 filter is a specific e46 M3 filter and set to be the best filter on the market for your M3 - not a "one size fits all" application.

Is it the cheapest? probably not. The best? Without a doubt. Rest assured - you are getting the best stock-replacement filter for your BMW's powerplant.

Does the Macht Schnell filter actually have greater airflow than the stock filter? I am realistic (not expecting any noticeable gains really) but am wondering if performance/gas mileage is at least measurably improved with this filter, even if I don't feel it...

Purchased my MS drop-in thru EAS. Looking forward to install this Monday. Having used the aFe DCI for the past year I'm looking forward to seeing if there is any difference between the 2 setups.

Price seems pretty decent, any special deals going on right now? I think that is actually about $15 or so less than the Helene was advertised for... of course they DID vanish here recently so maybe they didn't sell as many as they would have liked?

Anyway, TIA
