(Geeky warning) - Backing up my NAS to the cloud

Ok, so seems we have a few techies on baord, so thought you might find this interesting.

Finally spent a couple of hours to sort my NAS backup. I have a 2x1Tb Raid NAS (Qnap TS-210) which is the main network store for all the PCs in the house and media server for the PS3.

I always backup, but not as reguallly as i should and its to another drive in the house. My main fear is in the event of a house fire, the family pics, movies are toast

So, my NAS is now currently uploading 300Gb upto CrashPlan. its doing this via a QPKG (Qnap app). Even with BT Infinity, which claims 10mb upload, its only getting 0.5-2.5mbit max, so is looking like this will take about 10-15 days

But, once this is completed it will simply add any incremental changes, so should easily be done in an hour or two every day.

You get a 30day free trial with Crashplan and you can run it for local PCs as well. Its encypted at source with your own 448bit key (if you select the highest security option), so theoretically Crashplan or the FBI cannot backdoor into my backups...unless they bruteforce them. Crashplan is then just $50 per year for unlimited storage for one device - much cheaper than a couple of USB drives.

Geek over.

Personally - One of my backups is to a little 2.5" usb drive - take it with me everywhere or I leave it in the car.

I have 3 external usb hdd's and a 1TB ripping NAS which are all kind of set to sync up what I consider important. It was a pain though, so sounds like you have a good solution for what you need!

I'm actually hoping to find out if Ed is 'USB 3.0' compatible this weekend as it happens.... I need a real man to handle my faster upload speed!

I'm back home at the moment.

With 3 laptops and a couple of 2.5 external hard drives. One a little WD USB 3.0 - That thing flies !! Copied over 1.5 GB this morning ... took literally seconds.

I also have a couple of large memory sticks which I copy my main working files to.

And I have a QNAP T239 pro back home that I can sync with.

Belts, braces and string.

Hardware is cheap, my data is irreplaceable.

D.

I have been using Crashplan for several months now (after Mozy removed their unlimited option).

Yes it took WEEKS to do the initial backup but after than it's a fire and forget solution.

Once nice option however it that you can also set it up to backup to any other PC or server (including a friends machine or a work machine) so you can let the CP software take care of all your backup needs.

So now I have my desktop machines all being backed up to my local server and being backed up to the cloud and all for sensible money.

Highly recommended.

Considering how cheap many of the services out there are, you would be daft not to.

Your hard drive will fail one day so why risk it.

Don't panic, a back-up occuring as I type this, but (as Tim will vouch) my laptop is so crap it's virtually impossible to continue using it whilst a back-up is going on (hence the excuse 'I'll do it tomorrow') .

I've been looking for something similar to this for backups as I currently backup to an external USB drive and take that home with me. So I signed up to the free trial and will then use their multi-computer plan if it all works as it should (and I've no reason to think it won't).

Sod your semi's.....I've gone full lob-on.

I use a very swish and lovely looking WD external firewire drive for my beautiful (and still perfectly functioning)"antiques roadshow" powerbook time machine backups.
...and a noname black box HD jobby to back up the rest of the family's wanky netbook faux laptop thing-a-ma-wotsit....

The Cloud is a bit new to me.

I used to have an Atari.

I have a NAS 2*500Gb which backs up and holds all the family data. RAID array so no problems wit HD failure. The OP has gone the next step forward which is to back up the NAS itself which has got me thinking. As a PS3 owner though I don't have as much faith in Internet security as I used to. What is to stop this Crash Plan service being hacked?

All these HD backups are fine....until you're broken into or your house burns down

Drives are so cheap compared to the cost of replacing your data that it's not unreasonable to make two backups and store one offsite with friends / family.

Pure cloud backups are a joke on a consumer connection, just not enough upstream bandwidth even if the storage costs are OK. However, you can ship a hard disk to Amazon S3 and they'll upload the data for you from a data centre; THAT'S a nice solution to getting TBs of data "in the cloud".

Obviously all this assumes that you have good encryption, but Truecrypt full-disk encryption is free...
