Has been a little while since I last posted, so here is an update on current projects at my place

First of all the Gary 3 reno is complete and is up for sale. So far just low ballers and time wasters. Which is fine by me because I've been enjoying driving it around. I had forgotten how nice the stock 335s are to drive

Mini Gary is almost complete, Randel from one of a kind diecast, is putting the finishing touches to it, which I think includes applying a window tint and printing tiny tiny decals to match the one on the drivers side window

The mans attention to detail is just insane. Really looking forward to seeing how it turns out

Finally, still working on my sound system in SPCGRY. Well when I say working, I really mean tinkering. Got the audio tune dialed in ok, but the system lacks mid bass. So it looks like I will need to start over and reinstall and mount all the speakers properly, starting with the mbass.. Trying to decide the best location. Kicks are best (but are a real challenge in the E92), a door enclosure is the next best option (but lots of fabrication work) to cut out half the door card and build something that follows the curve of the door handle and frame. No room on the dash or in the firewall, so under seat (the stock OEM location) sounds like it will be the best bfb. The issue with under seats is the seat and driver/passenger act as a baffle and absorb most of the higher frequency output. For this reason most under seats can only play up to 150-200 Hz. This is why BMW uses a 4" mid in the door, so the mid can play low and integrate with the mbass around 180 hz. Will post some pics and videos along the way

Weather has been terrible down here in Melb, so not much opportunity to do much on the car..... I did get a chance though to reinstall my phase evolution aliante 12 LS sub. This time with a custom protective grille made by Travis Maddick (thanks mate). Travis is based out a Tyabb in the outer SE surburbs of Melb, where he runs a car audio workshop from a shed at his house. Travis does amazing work and is one of the most helpful people I know when it comes to car audio.

The phase evolution 12" sub is an old school Italian sub woofer especially made for SQ (sound quality) audio systems. It is a very shallow design so it can be fitted in front dash locations if that's your thing
Mine is fitted in a 28L sealed box in the far corner of the boot. The volume is perfect for the PE and allows it to play down below 20Hz

Have a few more things to do on the audio system over the coming weeks, but need the weather to fine up before I can do much ..... bloody Melbourne weather

With the tweeter sails done, next on the list is mid base. These are currently located in the doors and fire into the front seat bolsters (a terrible location)

Easiest place would be to put them under the seats, but I think if I can move the footwell module, I might be able to mount them in the kicks

First off I need some mounting rings. I have not made speaker rings before, but how hard can it be?? Pretty easy if you have a circle cutting jig actually

A few practice runs to make sure the size is right and then cut out the final mounts in 18mm hardwood ply

Might need a coat of black paint, but came out ok I think

another 4 hours of cutting and I am finally through to the other side (phew)

Needed to take off the fender and the door to do it !!!


Test fitted the speaker and mounting ring, painted all the bare metal to protect it from rust, ran some new speaker wires, bolted everything down with riv nuts and M6 bolts and covered the back of the speaker with water proof cloth

Then put the door, side skirts and fender back on..... another 11 hr day but at least the passenger side has a 6.5" midbass in the kicks..... and they said it couldn't be done hahah

Mini spcgry build is getting closer to completion, Randel at "one of a kind die cast" has put in over 200 hours into this already.... cant wait to see it finished

Drivers side kicks got the cutty cutty treatment on Sunday..... quite a long day having to strip out the interior, relocate the wiring on the drivers side, cut out the hole, mount the speaker and put everything back together...... I have to say the reciprocating saw made cutting a hell of a lot easier

Much harder to bolt on the mounting ring and speaker because of the wiring and pedals in the way, but got there in the end

Carpet needed a little trimming, otherwise the kick panel and under dash panel, fit back perfectly, with the new speaker completely out of sight

So with both mid bass speakers moved out of the doors and into the kicks, was it worth it? No doubt at all. The before and after measurements tell the real story (see below)

For anyone thinking of doing the same, the 6.5 inch focal 6w3 be fit perfectly between the fire wall, bonnet cable and door hinges. If you wanted to try and fit an 8, 10 or 12 inch, I dont think it would be possible.
Also it is much easier cutting from the outside, so def worth the time to remove the fender and door first
I marked the circle to be cut on the inside wall and then drilled holes around the perimeter so the circle could be seen on the outside. Is then a simple matter of cutting between the drilled holes

Finally if you have a sun roof, the drain hose runs right through the cut out area, so you need to be careful not to slice through it

Anyway, one job down and few more to go before this audio rebuild is complete

Decided I needed more amps, so redesigned and started over using ply instead of MDF..... no room for distribution blocks or fuses, so these will be mounted on a separate board on the side wall of the boot

Still have to finish off the wiring, drill some mounting points, make a protective cover etc etc before this is done

Already weighs a tonne. Will be interesting to see how the car handles when it is installed
