Steering angle sensor faulty?

Hi,

Long story in short, my vehicle pop up the Faulty messages suddenly in my iDrive when I was turning to right on 3rd June.

The faulty messages are
"DSC failure! Drive moderately"
"DBC failure! Drive moderately"
"Flat Tyre Monitor failure"
"Start assistant inactive"
Name: 01.JPG
Views: 12803
Size: 63.4 KB

First of all I tried to use Carly to diagnose my vehicle. It showed 3 different faulty code which is
"005E45"
"005E43"
"0094b5"
Name: 02.JPG
Views: 12132
Size: 93.1 KB

When the faults happen, all the safety function are disabled. The turning signal would not turn off automatically also.

I tried to pump the tires, it works for a while. No fault came out for a while.
Once I restart my engine, and the fault will come out again.

I did research from google, I also tried to clean up the steering angle sensor and sensor disc. No luck at all.

I knew the worst situation is replaced steering angle sensor which is very expensive.

In conclusion, did anyone have same experience before? Can you PM me how to solve this problem? I am willing to desire a beer if you can assist me.

My friend adviced me to 3MW at Osborne park to fix it, can anyone introduce me any mechanical workshops in Perth?

Much appreciated!!!

Find someone with Ediabas, and recalibrate the sensor. This is definitely worth a shot first. If the faults remain after that, then it's probably the sensor itself. But even if you replace the sensor you still need to calibrate it.

Hi bfleming,

I did research and someone suggest to recalibrate the sensor. However, I don"t know how to do. Do you have any tutorial website or movie? Thanks for your reply! Cheer!

You dont have to replace the whole unit, there are kits worth like 200 or 300 that will do the job. Mine did this and i was about to put the kit through it but it went away on its own and hasnt come back.

Ok, you need some hardware to do this yourself. I bought my cable & software from www.cable-shack.co.uk - I got the D-Can Diagnostic Package.
Once installed you open INPA to make sure you can connect. Close it, then open tool32. Load the correct file for your DSC (usually DSC87 on the E90) and go down through the menu on the left hand side until you find 'Lenkwinken Ausgleichen' or similar - that means reset your steering angle. Make sure the wheels are in the straight ahead position, then hit go. It should reset it.

If you're wanting something done sooner, these guys might be able to help: http://www.bmtechniks.com.au/ Just be very specific about what you ask them to do.

Have you done the steering angle sensor repair by wiping the optical disc down with an alcohol wipe? It cleared it for mine months ago and has never returned since. Those codes did appear when I overinflated my tyres accidentally once to 48psi but once I deflated them down to 38psi, the codes were gone.

Hi SE7EN335,

I tired to clean up the disc with an alcohol wipe, no luck.
I think it is time to replace a new angle sensor.

Thought I might share what I have read in the past.
These lights come on seems to be one or a mixture of the followings reasons:
Steering sensor
Wheel speed sensor
ABS sensor
Brake sensor
DSC pump

Just want to check if there be any other reasons too?

And if anyone knows why all these lights come on?

Want to gather all information here in case anyone needs it in the future.
I hope it won't be myself.

I had all these warnings a month ago. Ended up being my abs sensor on drivers side rear wheel touching a moving part. Re-routed it, problem solved

I initially thought it was SAS as well

One difference, you have SAS codes

Thanks for everyone advises.

I had ordered the parts 83 19 2 179 894 at BMW stealer.
It is $79.92 included GST.

I would try to replace and use ISTA-D to reset the steering.

Will report the result soon.

There are a few steering sensors on eBay, perhaps a used part will get you out of trouble

Hi Everyone,

My Steering angle sensor fixed!!!! Many thanks for everyone specially appreciated for Ken Oath!!

Just for a reference here,
I purchased the parts 83 19 2 179 894 (AU$80) at BMW stealer.
It is a Repair kit for SAS contains code disk.

Following Youtube tutorial, uninstall and get replacement for it.
It takes me like within 1 hour work.

After that, I used "Carly for BMW" to clear the faulty codes.
Unfortunately it cannot fully clear. It still had one faulty code left "00D35A".

Next step I used ISTA-D, did steering Angle Sensor Adjustment and clear faulty codes again. So far it seems no problem at all!!!

In conclusion, some simple stuffs are not worth to fixed by workshop unless you have no ideas for vehicle repairing. Workshop always charge the diagnose fee (at least $160) before do anything. Of course it took me a lot of time to do research also. Thanks for reading anyway.

As mentioned above, this can be due to

Steering sensor
Wheel speed sensor
ABS sensor
Brake sensor
DSC pump

If they were working on your suspension, is probably something to do with the wheel speed. ABS or brake sensor
I would take it back to where you had the repairs done and get them to fix it

Thank you for sharing this information. Hopefully cleaning the optical disk fixex my issue. Installing the repair kit is definitely the next step towards resolving this common issue. Cheers.

Amazing, super duper helpful even in 2022. I've got an 2007 e93 335i and about to order this to fix all of the same lights on my dash (DSC, DBC, ABS, Flat Tyre Monitoring, etc).

If you still have the car, how is it faring after all these years?
