Installing Satellite Radio in 'pre-wired' E90 w/iDrive

My car is apparently 'pre-wired' for Satellite Radio according to the spec sheet. So I called two area BMW dealers to get estimates for installation in my 2011 335i with iDrive. One quoted me at over $1,000, the other at $525. Both were far more that I'm willing to spend.

Am I crazy in thinking these estimates are way too high?

Would you guys trust a 3rd party independent shop with this type of installation?

It really depends on what you have, my car was prewired but the head unit I actually have the sirius receiver. I now have a head unit with the appropriate receiver, but I still have to pay somebody BMW or otherwise to activate it

There have been DIY's pm here

There have been DIY's pm here
Where people have bought the module you need off
ebay for 100 to 300 bucks and payed a coder
50 to 100 to program it into the car.
Not likely that you will find a shop to do the OEM installation.
Some of the Bimmertech certified outlets might.
There is a DIy in the Diy subform here.

2011 models with iDrive already have the tuner built in and wired, it's just disabled via FSC code and coding.

In order to enable it, it requires an FSC code to be loaded into the system to unlock the tuner and a VO change from Satellite Prep to Satellite Radio. A VO/coding change alone will not enable the tuner.

BimmerTech and BimmerRetrofit can procure the FSC code from BMW for your VIN that's required to enable the Satellite radio tuner and make the required VO change.
