Bypass oil filter

Has anyone of you thought of installing a bypass oil filter in the 335d? I remember reports from Germany where people were running engines 100,000km on a single oil change. They would regularly change oil filter and bypass filter and top off the oil which replenishes the additives.

I'm not thinking of copying that but wondered if it would make sense to try to get carbon deposits out of the oil using a bypass filter.
What's your take on that?

A co-worker did this on his commuter car (Yaris) he only changed his oil every 25K, (synthetic) and it had about 215K miles on it before some drunk driver hit him. I'm sure he'd still be driving the piss out of it if that didn't happen.

Great idea! OTR Trucks as well as light/medium duty trucks have been using this type of system for quite some time. I have often thought of putting one of these on my diesel trucks(s). I am in the half way thru it.
The hard part is to find adapter from M12 thread into 1/8npt and M12 back, there are not much clearance for that? and it needs a special adapter.

Standart, T-adapter in oil pressure switch, and drain back from the top of the engine.

I have got Amsoil kit. I am moving slowly, but at some point will be done.

Right now i have to fix all that alphabet stuff first

Sweet! Nice solution on the exit reentry through the filler cap. I didn't like the suggested solution of drilling a self-tapping port into the oil sump.
Where is your entry port / where is the oil coming from?

Actually i have order a insert into filler cap, as it is leaking right now.

The entry port is from the bottom of oil filter housing, where the oil pressure switch is located.

I have got a kit with a filter from ebay, from a guy who bought it and never have installed.
So i have a huge filter, and it takes more likely another two quarts if no more.

The bypass filters are always quite large to get the surface area. I was stuck with where to put it. I kept thinking, "where am I going to hide this?" Now am I looking at your system and wondering why I cared. It looks just fine in that location.

Did some research that I thought everyone might be interested in. Here’s a link to a Baldwin bypass filter and filter base, that is much more affordable. http://www.adiesel.com/search.php

These filters are available at Grainger for $10.48. Performance is 2 micron nominal, 12 micron absolute, apparently the same as Amsoil.

It might be doing same job, but you have to think and find all fittings before you start job, in amsoil they have more than you will need.

And as i told i got my from ebay very cheap, this is why i have got it

Not knocking the Amsoil kit. However, only 1 filter fits it - theirs. And it is expensive.

Sorry about the link folks. Just realized it brings you to site search. The filter is B164 and the base is OB1305. If you use the link's search with "B164", you will see 3 different size filters and the base.

Thread on the oil pressure switch is M12 X 1.5
The filter base is for filters with 5/8-18 thread
The oil input and out ports are 1/8 NPT

Hope that makes it easier for all who would like to try this

It will not work.
I have one if somebody needs it

Actually i have bought couple of this adapters and have tried to install them, none of them will work.

Finally i just my own adapter, including drilling and tapping.

I thought you said "in amsoil they have more than you will need." Now, you are saying you made your own adaptor. Please clarify, thanks.
