Timing Chain Replacement Job

Any of you guys paid to have your timing chain changed out before disaster strikes? If you paid someone to do it what was the cost? I just hit 160K and apparently this is when folks in Europe typically change them.

I did it on a 100k mi N47, that was just starting to make noise. My M57 330D is at 145k mi, and I haven't even thought about it yet

Why in the world are you worried about the timing chain? Are you not changing your oil or doing crazy OCIs?

According to who exactly? Chains have never been an issue on the m57d30 and never will be. All you've gotta do is keep up with your OCIs, use a proper oil and stop listening to crackheads that repeatedly spew this type of bullshit. Simple stuff.

I didn't think that required an explanation.

Over 300k miles and not changing chain.

Just do regular oil interval and it's fine (M57 engine).

personally it's not something i've worried about. There are cases of it happening but if you think about how many m57 and n57 engines there are out there (think beyond e90), there has been a handful of isolated cases which we know of (forums and youtube). Realistically, you'd have to be very unlucky for it to happen to you.

i personally wouldn't want to spend the money to get the chain replaced or spend the time and effort changing it myself.

Like mentioned before, maintain the car as it should be and it should run fine.

I guess you're different when you have owned one vehicle versus working on a bunch...

I have been following M57 world since I got my first of two 335d's -- I have not seen much if anything about timing chains, but this debate does surface periodically. As someone comment, OCI is probably important in this calculation. Maybe Brad Tourt or Matt Whitbread will comment, as they have seen a lot of engines.

Yeah, I've been following for a few years now and only seen pics of one broken chain, and video of another with a clearly damaged chain... Really not enough to stir any sort of concern, unless you can hear a suspicious noise...or unless you drive hard and don't change the oil, ever.

N47 chains on the other hand...whoa!

Is this something that should be done on the N52 as well?

No. Just maintain the engine properly and it'll be fine.
