So it looks like if the bottle label has LL-01 approval then the oil (the previous Group III one)will be OK on cars that require LL-01.

An interesting topic is if LL-04 can be used instead of LL-01(e.g. Walmart Castrol Edge is LL-04 approved). In CA the gasoline sulfur level is already similar to Euro's standard, so even though CA gasoline is E10 as long as OCI is 6k-8k(or maybe even 10k) the low SAPS LL-04 should work just fine in CA(and the Fed will mandate 10ppm sulfur starting Jan 2017 in all states). In fact a few German indies around here use Liqui Moly LL-04, and their customers(like myself) don't see any issue with LL-04 with 10k OCI.

So it was 71 out and I did an oil change.
Put in some 0 40 to use up my other bottle.. Went to my mom's and when I left I blew some smoke on a jeep at a stop sign lmao. Honestly though I think 0 40 is too thin. Not saying it's not a worn seal but it happens more when outside Temps are up and I drive somewhere then leave an hour or so later.

Mine was ll01 as I recall.. Can report back if it isn't. What I'm curious is, did the formula change or did they decide it wasn't good enough? THAT'S what matters here.

Sorry if I missed it but will they discontinue this and when?

I've been always a Mobil 1 fan and plan to use this on my new to me 325i.

But I may go with Castrol is this is the case.

0W-40 is no thinner than 5,or 10W-40 at operating temperatures.... 0W is only the start-up flow in temperatures below 32*F, and when the oil hasn't reach full operating temperatures. (200-245*F).

I live in cold climates (ohio) but 32 is pretty low and wouldn't matter in anything that's not winter so touche to that

Same here, I did my oil change today with the same oil and my car seems to run smoother. With a 6,000 mile oil change interval in a NA BMW, I'm not worried.

Castrol website specifically recommend 0w 30 a3/b4 oil for the n54.
Why argue or debate about what these engineers do and recommend?

Because engineers weren't pushing 20 psi?

Grabbed some ll-01 castrol 0-40 at walmart. Mobil 1 on the next shelf was the new non-bmw formulation

My oil temps are 7-10* cooler with the Castrol 0W-40 I just changed to. Engine seems a tad quieter and smoother.

My local WM is now stocking the non-LL01 M1 0w40. The alternative Pennzoil is 2x more expensive, and actually at this point dealer oil is a whole lot cheaper.

This goes on sale for $25.xx a jug about once a week on Anazon, but you can also find them at certain Walmarts for the same sale price.

Maybe without the "BMW Approved" Stamping, it will be sold cheaper to us

Considering that a lot of folks use Rotella T6 diesel 5w-40 motor oil in a variety of cars (including n54's and other e9x's)... I think you should be safe in using the non LL-01. However, I have not attempted this myself personally... it's only what I have "heard".

It's running very smooth so far.

The Castro Edge 5w40/0w30/0w40 at walmart is only LL-01 recommended not approved. Is there any Castro oil that has BMW LL-01 approval? Local NAPA stocks LiquiMolly LL-04 approved oil but those go for $8-9 per quart/liter.

I get the Castrol Edge 0w40 from walmart and its LL-01 approved.

What do you mean recommended and not approved? If it says LL-01 on the bottle then it's approved.
