Those interested in DIY oil changes on N51, 52, 54 and 55 do not have to use LL01 oil as LL01 was updated in 2018 to include N20/26 engine test.
You could use oils having MB229.5 approval (which is more stringent than LL01 anyway) and with that readily available oils such as Mobil1 0W40 and Castrol Edge 0W40.

Uh oh. Did the BITOG guys get wind of this already? Because that's going to mean yet another 40 page long Mobil 1 argument

That said, I think that was at roughly the same time as BMW's rec for N54s changed from LL-01 to LL-01 FE.

Problem with current LL01 spec. is that it bumped oxidation requirements to such levels that 0W oils due to natural acidity are not faring well. However, that does not have anything to do with older engines.
I would not use LL01FE in my vehicle if someone offered me for free for lifetime.
And yes, BITOG is up to date with this.
