Question Washer pump not working. Any ideas?

Hi there,

For a few months now the washer pump on my E90 has been unuseable. When I pull the lever back to use water from the res I get nothing, no wiper movement, no mehcanical noise or anything.

I've checked the fuses and they are all fine. Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong?

Also, where is the pump located?

Thanks for any help!

I had an issue with my e92 washers a few weeks ago.

Pump/s are located within the driver's side wheel arch.

Pain in the arse to get to, requires removal of the front wheel and plastic trim to drop down- had to do this to unblock the pump filter, clogged full of gunk due to the use of non-bmw screenwash.

I still had wiper movement though, and could hear the pump working for the windscreen washer.

Thanks for the reply mate. Since you had movement and could hear operation, perhaps my pump has given up then? I think for the sake of £10 I'll order one for when I take a look, at least then I won't need to go through the entire process a second time!!

No worries, I know the issue I had is a common one endured by many, and so well documented online as a result.

Just out of interest, do you have headlight washers? If so, are these functioning correctly?

Ah really, so it may be something that will re-occur. I don't have those no.

Have been looking at this - but they ask to double check the pump already on the car as there are different pumps between models apparently. Does this look the right one? Mine's an E90 SE 320i.

If the wipers don't sweep when you pull to wash, then it's not the washer pump. The pump (IIRC) is even fused separately from the wipers. I'd look to possibly a wire broken in the steering column area, or a contact gone on the wiper switch. Failing that, there will probably be a control box somewhere.

How strange. My pressure dropped this week (could still hear the pump though). So decided to try and fix. I did NOT remove the front wheel as I had no jack so just removed the bolts and one screw thing from the liner and then careful pulled out part of the reservoir and then the lower pump for the windscreen and cleaned the filter (couldn't get the whole piece out because the wheel was still in place) put everything back together and worked like a charm. Takes around 30 minutes.

I should add that means you could replace the little pump without taking the wheel off.

Best to check part numbers for the pumps on realoem.com, enter your vin and they then will be applicable to your car.

Adam, see the link below- this is exactly the problem I had

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=248705

Heard the issue is due to non-oem screenwash reacting with the heated jets.

You didn't take the wheel off !
WOW
Wish I had known that when I did mine last week !

Decided that the little filter needed taking off so that it didn't happen again but others recommend not to do this as it will only block in other areas ?

Am i right in thinking that if my washer pump is faulty then as its connected to my wiper stalk that would make my wiper not sweep also ?

No, I would expect the wiper motor itself to still work.

Wipers work under normal conditions just dont sweep when i pull the stalk, cant hear the pump working either. Think i may but a new pump and fit it just so i can rule it out as i cant find a thread anywhere with an answer to my problem.

May well be that the wipers don't work if no water has been squirted, would try replacing the pump as if it was working fine it should make a noise so clearly there is some fault with it at present.

How did you get on fitting the pump, was it tricky or easy enough?
