328 a little sluggish..

Is it just me, or does the E92 328i seem a little sluggish from 0-15/20 mph. I haven't driven a V or Inline 6 in years (have an 02 A4 1.8T), but I seem to notice it quite a bit. It could also be that mine is Auto, and my Audi is a 5 spd Manual. Thoughts?

It's not just about horsepower, but how powerful your horses are.

I don't have an AT, but I recall discussion saying the AT starts off in 2nd gear unless it is in sports mode. That would certainly slow things down.

The N52's need to be revved up, they live for the 4k+ rpms...I found the 328iT I drove decent below 4k rpms and rather quick at 4k+. That was with the 6-spd auto also, it starts off in first btw even in non-sport mode.

The steptronic, even in "D" mode starts in 1st. But it shifts to 2nd before you even notice. It will only start in 2nd when it senses that the wheels are spinning when starting off the line. (ex. in snow/ice)

I've got the 330xi auto and I agree it is a bit sluggish from standstill. Accelerating normally it seems to be constantly changing gears up to around 20 - 30km/h. I always drive in manual mode which helps a lot, but if you are in D or SD then I find it hard to accelerate moderately. You can either accelerate slowly (as you have found) or quickly (floor it - use the kick down button), but not in between.

I did and went for the 328xi (mainly for the x - if the 335xi had been available, I'd have gone for that). However, the 328 engine is great when revved but does need more pedal pushing to be responsive. With a 6 speed manual, you can be very aggressive in acceleration if you want. It doesn't have the pull from any engine speed torque of the 335i, but its plenty capable if you make sure you work the gear gates.
