intake manifold removal is pretty easy. I admit it looks tough. The first time I took about an hour to remove it. Second time was 25 minutes. I am a pretty experienced DIY guy with a lot of tools though.

Dude ,I owe you Dinner, you may have saved me $600.00 bucks.I spoke to chuck at SWB and he Quoted me $650 out the door,That is exactly HALF of what DESERT BMW quoted me for this repair. Sad to say it but once a car is out of warranty the dealer becomes Irrelevant to the BMW owner( at least the ones that value their hard earned dollars) .Thank you E90 forum ,Information is power !

Just one note about re manufactured starters...there are several companies that re manufacture starters, alternators, etc.....Be sure you get the best one you can find...ask the counter person if the one he recommends is the best one they carry...sometimes the guy behind the counter is trying to save you a few bucks...but in the long run on certain items...it pays to get the best you can find...

I would say because of the location of this starter....I would not want to do it again 2, 4, or 6 months later, or in fact ever again!.

I ended up getting a new Bosch one from Autozone.

First one was ordered from a number they came up with, and was per the box a replacement. Wouldn't line up.
Second one was the right one but was a core in a OH box,
Third one was the correct one.

Still no start ,I'm new here in Vegas , don't know any Indy mechanics here that I trust ,so I bit my tongue and had it towed to the local BMW dealer here in Henderson. Imagine my surprise when the service adviser called to quote me $1300.00 to replace the starter! I Know its a labor intensive job (plenum removal) but can anyone verify the estimated labor time for this job, the few search results I have found put the cost at $650- $900.If i could Get a copy of a dealer invoice or estimate to help me try to negotiate some kind of discount ,That would be very much appreciated ! http://www.e90post.com/forums/images...es/mad0259.gif
With the help of the very helpful members of this forum,I found the $1300.00 price quote to be EXACTLY Double the Price that a highly regarded Indy Shop here in Las Vegas (Southwest Bimmers 702 834-8070)was willing to do the job for. Desert BMW got $150.00 for the diagnosis(apparently took an hour @$150 per).Chuck @ SWB recommended 'CITY VIEW TOWING' who towed my baby 15 miles for a flat rate of $65.00.
Total cost of this expensive lesson $215.00 add the $650.00 for the repair ,and I'm at $865.00 for a savings of $435.00 (could have been $650.00).
All in all, not too shabby.
Does anyone think the techs at SWB work for free? Hell no, that price has a profit built into it (a reasonable one though)
Does anyone think the techs at SWB are 6 times Faster than the ones at DESERT BMW I think NOT!(It's more likely that the dealer has exaggerated the Labor time needed to ACTUALLY do the job)
I think its safe to say DOUBLE the price could be considered OUTRAGEOUS. The lesson here is DEALER SERVICE IS ONLY FOR CARS THAT ARE STILL UNDER WARRANTY,PERIOD.
Thank You all and Good Luck!
I hope this Info is Useful to someone ,in the Future!:dance :

That starter doesnt look too bad to get done. Basically it's just like installing a charge pipe/bov with a few more bolts.

You guys should be glad you're not doing one on a 1uz tundra. Worst design ever.

Shit -- if anyone in the Florida area needs to get their done, all it would take from me is a room at a nice resort for a weekend and a trip to a titty bar.

130$ for a duralast starter from autozone.
Did it myself. Spent in total about 6 hours (2 days). It's difficult to do it with 6 cilinder engines when you have very little room to get to some bolts or hoses. But you don't have to remove whole intake manifold to get to the starter. You can just move it off and a bit aside so you have enough space to get to it.
