320D Power Loss

Hi, re posting this thread in the correct section.

Got a 320D 2005 and am having a power loss problem. Basically if I put my foot to the floor it will slowly accelerate to about 2500-3000 revs and then pretty much stop there. Sometimes it will sit at that for a few seconds and accelerate past it as it normally would.

There is no smoke or noise coming from it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mark.

The thing is I thought turbo, but sometimes it is fine and drives as normal, then the next has this problem.

Are there any warning lights?
Do you have access to a fault code reader?
Where abouts are you?

ive had the same problem 3 times in 3 weeks and plugged it on autologic machine and no fault codes were found.
would be interested to know what it is as my turbo is only 5 months old.
my indy guessed at swirl flaps or maybe an electonic motor in the turbo or possibly the electronic actuater

Sounds like a sticking actuator arm to me. Happened to me about 9 months ago - common problem according to the dealer.

Mine was doing exactly the same, no power sometimes, then acting as normal the rest. It eventually stopped completely and I had to drive a none turbo's motor for a couple of days!

i dont think my actuator was replaced so i will ask indy to change it if not expensive as a trial and error situation

I use him for technical work and coding but he has a very good reputation for mechanic and service work.

Mainly german cars that he accomodates.

Does anyone know whether you can just replace the electronic actuator or is there a repair kit for it?

I had the same problem, although it was intermittent. I suspected it was something to do with the turbo variable vanes locking up, maybe from some carbon caught under one of the vanes. As it was under warranty I took it to the dealer. I discussed the problem with the head technition. He aggread. The turbo was removed and inspected. He lubricated the shaft to the vanes with some sort of high temp lubricant. He gave the vehicle back and put in a claim for a replacement turbo. The vehicle was back powering on with the lubed up shaft for a while. It started playing up again just before the replacement turbo arrived and was installed. Maybe there has been a slight modification to prevent the shaft locking up, as the vehicle hasn't missed a beat since. I have just knocked up 110,000km

This is the repair part which goes on the actuator and some high temp grease to go on the actuator shaft. I'm going to fit mine soon and run some of that turbo cleaner through it to clean the vanes. My power is intermittent so i am hoping this fixes it

Very interesting,
Did you get the repair part and grease from BMW and if so do the items have part numbers?

As it has happened to me in the past, it would be great to be able to access the items easily.

I don't have the part number but they gave me two types of actuator as my turbo could be one or the other? if you speak to your local parts person they should help you. They will have to check with the workshop as it's a recall item not something usually sold through the parts dept. This part cost £16

This may help tho

Same thing's just happened to my motor. Fault code comes up as 44cc, which suggests an intermittent fault with the electronic turbo actuator. Is it possible to remove and replace this without removing the entire turbo?

I have not read every reply but a fault code reading would be where to start. i know i shouldnt advise this as its now not mot proficiant but i would be temted to do and egr delet one of the easiest vehicles to do and what a diffence it makes and to be honest undetectable unless stripped down.

i had the same problem.. you will be surprise if you take a look inside your intake just to find out that your swirl flaps arent being open when needed. you need to remove them and your car will be alive again. thats what i did
