Idiot(me) installed auto trans wrong

It’s a 2007 335i and I just removed the transmission to do real main seal. Had no issues taking out the trans but struggled to get I re installed. I spent some time wiggiling the converter until it finally slipped into the third position.
Upon installing I realaized that something was stuck in between the block and bell housing but I had already tightened the converter and fly wheel bolts I then loosened the bolts about a 1/4 and pulled the bell housing out. Engine spins well but makes a noise and kinda sort of grinding during a rotation. I turned it on and it sounded like the engine was knocking. How do I proceed to get the torque converter lined back up without removing the trans? Or do I need to remove it again and fully bolt it up to the car with it seared in fully before doing the flywheel bolts. Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear of your pain, I installed one wrong decades ago when I was putting a used transmission into one of my many Ford Capri's from the 70's. Only had one Auto and that soon became a 289 powered car.

yup, redo and recheck, hope for the best. tc should be tight in and not able to slip finger behind tc/bell and verify fit before bolts install

So I took the trans off and put the tc back all the way the photo is off the clearence. I can’t get my fingers behind it and when I rotate it I hear the pump and there is no point where I hear the banging like before. So now when I bolt it up to the car I should do bell housing bolts then the tc bolt slowly? Because I have a feeling it would just come out of that last point.

Here is the gap between fly wheel and tc with bell housing bolts tight. Should I tighten from here? I’m scared as I tighten it will pull the tc out to far.
