I measured the voltage while the engine was running using the on-board hidden menu, it was fluctuating around 14V. I did not measure it using my multimeter yet; can't do this now as the battery is presently disconnected. I've got the oscilloscope diagnostic procedure for the alternator but I took a quick look under the hood and cannot see the voltage terminal on the alternator. (I guess I have to start taking things apart to find it).

The battery has been disconnected and on the external charger since last night and it finally registered as fully charged when I checked it a few minutes ago (according to the charger - one of those "intelligent" multi-stage ones). It never actually reached this stage when I last charged it (while fully connected to the vehicle), but it was overnight similar to this time - I just figured I didn't let it charge long enough.

Now I still don't now. Need to wait a few hours and check the voltage again (now it's at 13.12V). Battery? Alternator? Parasitic draw? I think I might have wasted a perfectly good BMW battery, even though it was over 6 years old...

Any more ideas would be appreciated, like how I can test the alternator without taking apart the engine...

I reconnected the battery and came back a few hours later, the voltage was at 12.58. Seems a little low considering I haven't even started the car once after a full charge...

Now I just started it and took measurements while running: 14.4V at the jumpstart post, 14.3V at the battery. 0.1V drop, is that normal?

I also scoped the AC-coupled waveform at the jumpstart post (since I couldn't get near the BAT+ terminal of the alternator.) It looks almost textbook with about 0.4V peak-to-peak. (I'm using a x10 probe):

http://66.212.224.123/20130918_scope_at_jumpstart.jpg

I think I will need to monitor the voltage more closely over the next few days.

how long do our batteries usually last? My 2006 just conked out on me today and had to call AAA for a jump.

Make absolutely certain you connect the vent tube to the battery!!! From experience, I know that if your alternator regulator goes bad and puts out too much voltage, not only do you get hydrogen gas in your trunk if you don't have the tube installed, but you also get battery acid in your trunk. Not a good thing.

I am assuming you are referring to non-AGM batteries...

All batteries, AGM and non-AGM batteries should be vented. AGM batteries rely on a slight positive pressure to combine oxygen and hydrogen to form water so they never have to be serviced, however, in an overcharge situation, higher pressures within the battery will result and unless the battery vents, it will be damaged.

There is no vent connector on my BMW AGM battery. AGM batteries, in general, are of such a construction as to prevent any acid spillage regardless of installation orientation, nor vent anywhere near what a non-AGM battery does.

The situation you are referring to of overcharging is a worst case scenario that is handled by a safety pressure relief valve. But again, my brand new BMW battery does not have any vent connection that would normally be required of a non-AGM battery than vents "normally" (frequently) as a result of its cycle of operation.

I tend to agree with you Augster but I am really not that familiar with the "newer" BMW's. My 2007 328i has a vent tube and when I replaced my bulged battery, I did so with a non-AGM battery and reattached the tube. (I also cleaned up the battery acid that leaked out of the vent tube to the garage floor).

Battery manufacturers will tell you to not place an AGM battery in a closed container. Specifically, there are a lot of boaters that want to enclose the AGM battery(s) to prevent salt water from getting to the batteries and electronics, causing electrical corrosion etc, etc. The battery manufacturers specifically say not to put the batteries in a closed container because in an overcharge situation, the internal relief valve will open to protect the battery.

That being said, I am certain the engineers from BMW have figured out that it is OK in the newer BMW's to not require a vent tube to the AGM battery. Perhaps the trunk volume is large enough or not sealed to the point where it is considered a closed container? Maybe there are electronics that prevent the alternator from overcharging the battery?

hi. just a quick question n ncs expert, how do you get to klasse batterie as I do not have a clue how to get to it. I got a e91 lci 2009.

Is there any update on this/can anyone else confirm? I have an 11/06 E92 I need to do, does this mean that INPA, ISTA/D, Toolset32, and BMW Logger will all be unable to register the battery?

What's the suggestion for the vehicles then if registration is not possible? Only replace the battery with an OEM-spec replacement and don't upgrade to AGM? Or is it safe to switch to a different battery type and just code the VO/CAS but not register?

Hi guys, when I open MSD80, I don't get any jobs in the list. Any ideas ? I have NCS Expert running and also INPA, no problems.

My replacement battery was an exact-same spec BMW battery, so I didn't have to bother with changing charging parameters (the main reason why I chose OEM); thus, I have no experience with the MSD80 job, sorry.

It is for an exact-same spec as the original BMW battery. It even is one from BMW. I am however not able to get the Jobs list when I open MSD80. Did you use an other way to register it ?

It's been almost eight months now and it was such a quick process, I don't even remember what I did since I've performed many other coding projects after that.

That's the problem I see with "casual" coding: you only perform certain procedures once or periodically but with years in-between, so the steps quickly fade from memory (at least in my old brain!).

If you already have the cable and your new battery is same capacity and type as previous one, you can try BMWLogger

The link is not working because the forum moderators have blocked it - it won't work thru PM either - he will need to email it to you...
