bought a low mileage 04 discovery (which i know has been very well looked after) recently to replace high mileage 97 which i had no problems with at all, went to france last week with a trailer 350 miles south at 4pm a pipe came off the gearbox oil cooler and blew all the oil out leaving me stranded on the hard shoulder wonderful!! apparently its a common fault basicaly the pipe is swaged on and can pop off easily, what a joke something as important as this should be bolted on, anyway through help of some friends what could have ben a nightmare turned out well although we had to get home via ferry to portsmouth a 6 hour sea trip. so far this little episode has cost me around £600 without the repair, the car is in a french garage. i still have to get back to collect it. all for the sake of a two bit connection. will i buy another one? i very much doubt it.

A mate had one do this (or something similar) when it was 1 week old. Oil all over the garage floor. Maybe worth looking to see if there was a recall/fix.

TD5 discoveries are great and generally super reliable - well as reliable as a landrover can be!

There is generally a fix for most known landrover issue, a large proportion of owners do their own repairs and servicing (as I do). The LR4x4.com forum is the best place for knowledgeable advice.

I doubt there is any gearbox damage!? But if so Ashcroft transmissions are the place to go! They will more than likely even know of the fix.

im hoping its ok but as its 350 miles away im in the hands of a french garage although a friend who lives in france is keeping an eye on things once i get it home i will see if a better fix is available, it was one of those things that you just could not see was going to let go, could have been dangerous going down a steep hill with a trailer behind.

The cooler pipes have a 'quick release' fitting on each end where they connect to the oil cooler either side of radiator. I presume this is where it blew off?
It's quite a common fault as the pipes get older and the quick release fitting gets weak.
Don't know of any mod available but best to replace both the pipes and make sure the ends on the oil cooler are in perfect condition.
The auto box should be fine and usually the pipes can just be clicked back onto the cooler and gearbox topped up to get you home and replace pipes later!

yes thats where it came off but the plastic end of the quick fit broke off it looks brittle and i suspect the heat from the oil has done this, so no pushing it back have asked the garage to replace both pipes and its good to hear the gearbox is probably ok. do you know which direction the oil flows i presume the passenger side comes from the gearbox?

Sorry not sure which way it flows but suspect your right that it comes from the gearbox on the passenger side as this is usually the side which blows of first!

Glad to see your changing both pipes as if changing just the one the other side usually shortly follows!
