I have a black '08 335i coupe. It is blacked out and the interior is red. The only thing, is that my headliner is grey. What are my options for turning it to black?

Pull it out have it dyed or pull it out and have it wrapped in suede/alcantara/etc. I'd get it wrapped, I've never been a fan of the stock headliner material in most cars. I've done it in my Infiniti, at some point I'll have it done in my E92.

How long would that take me roughly. Or, how much would it cost me to hire someone?

I honestly have no idea for an E92. I've never personally done it or known anyone local who has. FWIW, on my Infiniti FX (much bigger car), it was ~$600 for the headliner, sunroof, A, B, and C pillars. Took the shop most of a day to do it because most of the interior had to come out to get the headliner out. Not sure if it's the same with the BMW. On a previous car, the total was only half that (same shop) because literally all they did was pop some clips on the pillars and the headliner came out. With my Infiniti, most of the hatch trim down to the spare tire had to come out and the seats came out because of the way the trim all attached.

Hopefully the E92 isn't as bad. I'd just search the forum, I'm sure there are DIY's.

well i have msport which comes with a black headliner

if i had kept my last car longer, i would have changed it, though

Trade it in for an 09 model with sports package, or '10 with m sports package.

Find a second hand one? mine came with black Alcantara headliner, it's lovely. Have a look for breaking e92's.

I want a black headliner, if I could order it again! All of the black trim in the car and to have a gray headliner, they need to speak with Martha Stewart on the color combinations without paying $3000.00 for the M-sport!

I looked into it at one point. The pillars and switches were reasonably priced but the headliner was expensive. I have also heard that the install with a sunroof is difficult. I decided there wasn't enough bang for the buck to pull the trigger. Tischer BMW can put together a price quote for the parts if you're interested.

what about the airbags? doesn't wrapping or using aftermarket headliner compromise the safety?

Airbags aren't affected at all. The curtains should pop out between the pillar and headliner (that's how they are on most cars I've seen). The headliner itself has nothing to do with the airbags. When you pull it, the airbags are still attached to the car. On a previous car which was unfortunately totalled, the side airbags deployed and the wrapped headliner had zero impact.

Im tackling this sometime next month. I tried earlier but as others mentioned it takes some time and is quite difficult around the pillars and sunroof.

Getting the headliner out is a job for someone with plenty of patience and the right tools. Its not difficult, I just took one out of an E36 with a sunroof, ect....If you go slow and have the inexpensive trim removal tool kit (Autozone, Harbor Freight, ect) you can do this.

The headliner material can be dyed but I would go for a wrap. If you find 3M spray trim adhesive (messy nasty stuff, but its great!) and any cloth-like, or leatherette material at the bulk fabric or some (dare I say it) Walmarts, or Craft stores, you should be good to go.

You can even wrap the liner in "Toy Story" or "Cars" Bedsheets if you really wanted to!!!


To wrap the material properly, (headliner out of the car) overlay the whole liner with the new material leaving a couple of inches of extra material all the way around the liner. Glue in place with the adhesive. Use a flexible flat plastic or cardboard material "squeegy" or your hands to smooth the fabric out...(from the center out) LET IT DRY.

Then, very carefully cut out all the openings in the liner leaving extra material to wrap up over the edges and glue those in place. (for example, if you have a dome light, cut from the center of the opening towards the corners....but dont cut the material all the way to the corner...leave maybe 1/8"....this will wrap around the edge of the opening)

Follow the cut lines of the factory liner where they wrap around the edges whenever possible. you dont want your covering to bunch up, causing fitment problems later.

You probably have the visors, interior light pod, sunroof trim, pillar covers (maybe) and a few other items to take out...


I can imagine that if you can make a template, or take the liner to a seamstress or upholsterer, they can work with you to design a kick ass liner...I can see black with red piping or accents...way cool!

You can find upholsterers that do great work. Go to a car show, Marina or internet to find a good one. They do great work, can sew different colored materials together, ect...

I just got a seat for a golf cart reupholstered and the woman exceeded my expectations!
