In which gear? with what diff? You can't just take a % off crank torque to give wheel torque.

In first gear, lets say 3:1, plus the diff at say 2:1 (guesses), that means that 500nm at the crank will be 3000nm!!! at the wheel hub (- losses)

So I would say its not the relatively low crank torque (input torque) which is the limit on a transmission, but the 'box output shaft torque in lower gears and the diff rating.

Maybe thats why they limit engine torque output in 1st and 2nd gears?

According to BMW Car magazine, the 335i manual gearbox is the one they use in the US M5, and that has 384 lb/ft torque.

I do know from first hand experience that the 335i auto gearbox is rated at 450nm (336lb/ft) torque - it's surely no coincidence that the upcoming BMW Performance tuning kit bumps the torque up to exactly that figure.
