Exhaust Grumble 328 > 323

Hi Guys,

I had my car in for service and I was driving a 328 non xdrive loaner for the first time (I have driven LCI 328Xi + LCI 323). The grumble from the exhaust was a lot deeper and enjoyable out of the 328. Is it merely the bigger engine or does it have to do with exhaust difference in the LCI models. It was quite enjoyable reving the engine just to hear that grumble. Also, it wasn't so pronounced that I would have guessed perfomance exhaust. Plus, it was a loaner.

Anyone have any insight?

The 323 has a 4 cylinder engine.

Generally the more cylinders and larger displacenent engine the nicer the sound.

The exception is motorcycles because some twins sound amazing like the Ducatis.

My bad it's the 2.5 i6 vs the 3litre I6 in the 328.

All the (stock) E90's in North America are I6's.

However the 316i, 318i, and 320i and 320si are all I4's.

323i is a Canada-only model using the N52B25.

To the OP: since the 328i sounded better than the 328xi you've driven, and both have the same engine, I'd bet it was the exhaust you were hearing. Could be a performance exhaust... ?

to be honest I only had the 328xi for a night and I wasn't really paying attention. I had the 328 for almost a week so I got well acquainted with it. It might just be a variation in the exhaust.
