Looking correct diff oil for 2009 E93 N51
Hi all,
I have an 2009 E93 328i, I will change transmission and differential fluid in next few days but I am confused with Diff fluid, I called my local BMW dealer and asked them a part number for diff fluid they said they dont sell it and no part number is available, I was able to get part number for differential though; 33107566191 According to him it is open differential but he was not sure. What type of diff fluid should I get? On ECS there is one but says for limited slip diff. I am lost. Thanks |

You can enter your VIN on RealOEM.com to verify, but it should be P/N 33117695240 or 83222365987. It's Castrol SAF-XO fluid...I don't believe Castrol sells it themselves anymore but it should be available from BMW under those part numbers.
They also use SAF-XO fluid as Final Drive fluid on some BMW motorcycles. My nearby BMW motorcycle dealer had it way cheaper than the car dealer...If you have one near you it might be worth checking with them. |

You want gear oil for non-LSD differentials. I used Mobil 1 75w90 GL5 but Castrol was the factory fill.

I think 75w90 GL5 is the key.. I have been using Redline in differentials on BMWs for about 15 years with no problems. Others may prefer Motul, LiquiMoly, Mobile 1, Castrol, etc......

Should I go with OEM or RedLine or any other brand? Redline has one product that is equivalent to 83222365987 and it is for both open and limited slip diffs. https://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=133&pcid=4 Any other recommendations? For tranny, I choose OEM but for diff I read mixed reviews. I live in SoCal I dont know if that would make any difference |

My local dealer had 33117695240 in stock which is previous revision according to ECSTunning. New part number is 07512293972 but did not come up on dealer's inventory.
Paid $15/bottle and got two of them. hopefully will go to friend's shop sometimes next week and change fluid |
