I think i may have figured it out...

Was reading this thread and I have an x3 e83 lci with CCC and thinking why cant I just get rid of that annoying DVD drive that never works like we all want to do.

This is my thought so far and I will be exploring it soon.

It is possible. The dvd drive is connected to the MKiv nav comp by a 50pin zif ribbon. There are adapters that go from 50pin zif to 40pin zif for small LCD screens. You can get a SD card adapter that goes to the 40pin zif (people do this with iPod to upgrade from HD to SSD) or you can get an SSD that has a 40 pin zif connection (rare to find since no longer manufactured)

After that when copying files to the new drive from the DVD. Should work as usual as long as things are formatted in FAT since that is what the nav DVDS are formatted in.

I am praying that this is plug and play. This solution would be a final solution given that 2015 was the last map update we will ever get if you have a CCC bmw. However, dumping the horrendous DVD drive for a flash based drive would hopefully end all issues with the ancient CCC technology.

Out of curiosity, how would you get the CCC to see the SSD as a DVD?

Usually the hardware info is exchanged during initialization at power on and long before the operating system/firmware polls the device for DVD "book" or ISO info...
