335i navigation complaints
okay so picked up the 335i for a week now and fidling with the nav. 1st complaint is the delay in calculating routes. my gf has a nav in her accord and it calculates and reroutes a lot faster. i know the system has a lot more information to take into consideration like real time traffic, detours, etc. but i want to know if any of you guys are experiencing the same delays. the second complaint, well not a complaint but more of a dissapointment is that the nav doesnt fill up the whole screen, instead it does the split so you can multi-task. i would've preferred if there was an option to just full-size it.
another dissapointment is with the diamond preset button that i've configured to call up my phone address book. i keep having to click on it multiple times until it pops up. is this just 1st year bugs with the system or should i take it into the dealer to have it checked out. other than the items i've mentioned above, i love this car.

Granted, the NAV isn't a speed demon. However, it works much better than my aftermarket NAV system. You answered your own question when you said it has to account for all the traffic information. I'd rather wait 2-3 minutes for a route calculation than 15-30 minutes in a traffic jam.

Yes we find the nav to be slow, another complaints is there is no post (zip) code address entry - but I think the slowness is because of the traffic jam checking which is really good.
The nav in my LR Disco 3 is far superior, big touch screen is brilliant.....and it didn't cost £2000!

My nav system seems to work fine. When calculating a route, it doesn't take more than 60 seconds (reasonable imo). I'm also pretty sure you can have the map fill the whole screen by clicking on the correct icon when in map mode. Personally, I like to multi-task (i.e. changing the radio station while viewing directions), so the default view is far more functional.

Smeff, thats interesting because the manual mentions post code entry but it doesn't give you the option on screen - perhaps post code only covers Germany or mainland europe?

At least you have NAV.
But I just bought the new Garmin Nuvi 660. Haven't taken it on the road yet, but it looks awesome! Looking forward to playing with it. It also has RTTI.

My nav doesn't seem to take too long. Haven't seen it hit a minute of wait time... maybe I'll try a further distance, but for the most part it comes up within a few seconds.
In map mode there are a bunch of icons on the side to scroll through, as someone mentioned above. Maybe there is a full-screen option there, maybe not. The only thing I don't like about the assistance window is I can't have two different map views... once I change one, both windows show the same map.

I think the longest I have ever had to wait was 30 seconds...

it seems like higher class bimmers (5,6,7-series) have this shortcoming taken care of. i played around with one in 6-series and 7-series and the iDrive response was a lot more lively than the one in the 3-series. as for the 5-series, i saw a video review of the 550i and the delays weren't an issue there either. more money == more power, i guess.

well played with the nav some more today. i can deal with the delay seeing that it'll get me to my destination the fastest. my only gripe now is that i can't search for a specific store or place. i have to use the location feature and scroll down under it's available sub menus.

As for calculating and recalculating routes -- I find that the initial route calculation takes about the same amount of time as any other nav, maybe 30 seconds or so for your average route. But rerouting is a lot faster than any other nav I've used. On my car, it's almost instant, to the point where you don't even realize you missed the turn and have been rerouted. The new route is instantly in place of the old. Most other navs will tell you "off course, rerouting" or similar before rerouting, and there is a delay while it calculates a new route. Not on my car. Yours isn't like this? Maybe it's the addition of RTTI?

rerouting is quick and finally tested the accuracy in terms of real time traffic routes and was pretty close to where the congestion started and ended. i guess you have to take the good with the bad. maybe the next dvd will allow for user input of locations.
