Hi Del, when was the last 'fuel pump update'? Only asking because my car was a May 09 build and as you know my pump is getting replaced as we speak..........if your car is older than mine i would assume you have at best the same pump as me, if this is the case i would demand a new HPFP regardless.

We just had an uprated one made for us by a company who builds cars for Time Attack.

We will be testing it out on a stage 4 (400+ BHP) car which is not working on the standard fuel pump.

Will let you guys know how it goes.

Not saying that the foreman was BS you, i'm sure you do have the latest pump but the new ones are still failing. Its shocking really that BMW has had so long to rectify this and still cant get it right.

I agree. I am selling the car next month so it doesn't really affect me but if i was keeping the car under warranty i wouldn't be too concerned - as a long term ownership prospect (out of warranty) i wouldn't be so happy.

I took delivery of my 08 335i touring with 24k miles 2 weeks ago and the HPFP flagged a fault on the way home :-(

It was then in the dealers for several days while they updated the software (which requried replacement of the siren unit to complete!!!). They said although the original fault was flagged as HPFP this should fix it...

Got car back and fault appeared after 15 miles driving.

Took it back and told them to change the pump which they have done now and all is fine again :-))

I just dropped mine off yesterday at a dealership here in Germany and got a call back today and they were talking about the 1st thing they want to do is "update software". If it comes to not fixing the problem is it true that BMW has extended warranty for this problem to 5 year/100000 miles? If so where would I get this information to take to the dealer for they are saying they have never heard of anything like this.

Thank you in advance.

Please keep us posted, I think this would be one of the most appreciated upgrades for the N54 engine.

VERY IMPORTANT

Guys please report the HFPF issue to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association..Here is the link.

https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/Complaint.cfm

The more complaints they receive the more likely that they could force BMW to issue a recall and fix this problem once and for all.

There is also an online petition to get our voices heard about the HPFP problems with our cars..PLEASE spread this around..get as many people to sign as possible.. I just did

http://www.petitiononline.com/fixpump/petition.html

Also this problem is finally starting to get some media attention so we need to make a stink to the rest of the world and not just here on the forums. Check this article out...

this issue almost put me off buying a 335i but after reading a lot about the newer hpfp not having as many issues i'm going to go for it, will have warrenty for a year anyway and with a bit of luck maybe the one i buy will have had this issue already so i wont go through the hassle of replacing it.

It shouldn't really put you off buying a 335i in Europe as it doesn't seem to be that common an issue here. I have only heard of a couple that have had theirs replaced once, so nowhere near the pain that the US guys have felt on this issue. From them it sounds more like an exception if you haven't had it replaced a number of times.

I wonder how many buy used cars though and have no idea how many pumps its had?

I rang the previous Sytner service and they were extremely helpful and gave me the whole history of my AUC.
I had a HPFP last year at about 30k.

Last week I had a service and they uploaded the new software that primes the pump when you unlock or close a door.
You can hear it whining as soon as you unlock, and again if you close a door if its not started for a while.
This is clearly to force feed a prime to the HPFP from the LP pump in the tank end.

Steve.

Steve.

I had that upgrade a few week prior to mine needing a new pump and 6 injectors

My 335i maintenance records show one HPFP which was fitted in Feb at 32k. Now at 34.5k so fingers crossed I'll see a bit of life out of this one.

Can anyone tell me how much an extended warranty (comprehensive) will cost for these cars?

Somewhere in the region of £270-700 annually depending on mileage, what excess you choose and if you want Full BMW Emergency Breakdown Service included or not. Unless you have high mileage it will be in the £350-500 region with all the bells and whistles.

Excess varies from £0, £100 or £250.

AFAIK, the price is devided in to 3 bands depending on milage.

Would be worth asking them if it needs a DME software update for the HPFP.
They possibly havent done it, and seem to just wait until you drop in for service.
Its worth doing, given how it operates.
It ought to prevent the failures.

Some obviuos misunderstanding though from the BMW tech boys.
They seem to read a document that tells them the patch will fix starting / hpfp issues.
Of course it wont, its clearly a preventative measure and not a fix.
A busted HPFP is just that, it cant be frigged.

But if you try to discuss it with them you just get the arrogant 'who the f### do you think you are?' look.

Then they start digging their heels in.

Mines had a 2 or 3 excessive cranks of late, the worst one was last night after work, at least 3 second to start, it took all my willpower to keep the clutch down that long, it seemed an age.

I was running late and did jump in very quicky, straight on the clutch and pressed the starter together. This may be exacerbated with Comfort access, as the first idea the car has is when I pull the door open and jump in, no advance pump priming completed when you blip the fob from a few yards away.

This morning I opened the door sat in and waited for the pump primimg to finish (5 secs or so) then it started right on the button.

We'll have to wait and see.....
