Thanks for the before pics buddy! I’m sure you had to go digging to find those. I really appreciate it. Yeah so it looks like the Eibach Pro kit springs dropped it maybe a 1/2” or so lower then the sport suspension height wouldn’t you say? The Europarts.com site that you sent the link for, how do you add the Koni Special Actives into the cart? I can’t even select them... what made you choose to buy from them? How much did they cost you? |

I think the Eibach SportLines would compromise the comfort benifits of the Koni Special Actives that I’m after.. plus as much as a side of me would love to have the more aggressive drop I also fear that I better be careful with what I ask for because I wouldn’t want the concerns of bottoming out over bumps as I drive around town and the experience that comes with lowered cars. I think a moderate drop would be safer for me in the long run. |

No doubt man that is lowered very nicely. That actually looks like it has dropped a good 1 inch lower than factory Sport Suspension. That is low enough for me too And you only needed to use 12mm spacers for rear and front ha? I wonder if with my car being pre-lci whether 12mm would give me the same results... are you pretty content with everything still? |

Is anyone using Z3 upper shock mounts along with these Koni´s? They are 10mm lower, hence you lower the car without shortening the suspension travel.

I am thinking of ordering the Koni special active shocks and struts as well as the Michelin Pilot sport all season 4 from the tirerack. After 8 years I am fed up with my car. Its a 2009 335xi with manual and in a beautiful blue color. I only have 79k miles as I usually ride my motorcycle to work. I am so fed up with the ride comfort of the car over the terrible Boston roads that I had enough! I have switched the suspension around 60k miles at Firestone (didn't know better) and the stock tires to Bridgestone driveguard RFT. There was improvement but still, wife's GTI's ride was better. I love everything else about the car - the heavy and direct old school steering, manual transmission, handling, braking, etc...
Any feedback? How much should it cost to install the tires and suspension bits approximately? Anybody from the Boston area can recommend a shop for this? Thanks! |

I went against my best judgment and went with the more aggressive look and installed the Bilstein B12 Pro kit which combines Eibach Pro Springs and Bilstein shocks. My car already had the sport package so I got a measly 1/4” drop from that kit and sacrificed a lot of comfort in doing so. Did the install myself it took me 2 days (12hours) because it was my first suspension job. After 1 month I was convinced that I hated the ride quality and decided to put my stock Sport package springs back on and if I was going to do that I may as well reconsider the Koni Special Actives. Now to be clear results truly depend on the person and what vehicle/ride quality they are coming out of. I have owned lots of Toyota/Lexus cars so the comfort expectation bar is pretty high and I’m hard to please. Other people could have driven in my BMW with the suspension I mentioned and feel like it is pretty comfortable to them. So you should probably focus on satisfy your needs and don’t just go by others opinions. So long story short I went back to the Sport Package stock springs combined with Koni Special Actives and that change did numb the ride down for comfort some. It still does not feel like the Toyota/Lexus Camry or ES300 cars I’ve owned though. If you are trying to achieve as much comfort as possible then consider in addition to Special Actives on Stock Springs and additionally sizing down to as small of a wheel as you can go with that fits over your breaks of course and that along with some comfort tires will get you the most comfortable ride. In my case my 335i E90 with sport package came with 18” wheels and there is just no way I’m gonna have that soft Toyota ride that I’m use to with that little of rubber. No suspension in the world will make up for a couple inches of rubber. I can size down to 17” wheels and no further. The best time to consider doing that is perhaps when I’m due for 4 new tires so that the 18’s” can just be stored away along with the existing tires so that one day when I’m done with the car and am ready to sell it they can go back on to retain the stock look. As far as how much for the labor to install. It is a lot of work. Having done the job a couple times now. I got faster but it is a lot work. I didn’t think it was worth paying someone else to do the job initially but I have a different attitude about that now. It’s not that it’s hard work. it’s just a lot of work. Maybe $400-$600 might be a fair price for labor. In your case your xi comes with 17” and you may be able to drop down to 16”. I know I emphasized the tires quite a bit here but it’s for a good reason even though I heard others talk about the much of the comfort coming from the tires over the years the message still didn’t resonate with me. I now know that it really is true. Am I content with the Koni Special Actives yes and no. It is considerably more comfortable than the Bilstein setup I had but I honestly don’t think I will be fully satisfied until those tires can help the suspension absorb some of the shock. 18’s certainly don’t for me. 17’s will probably be better but I bet 16’s will be the sweet spot. For the record my Camry was on 15’s No wonder! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Last edited by Salzamani; 08-04-2020 at 08:21 PM.. |
