Updating NAV maps on idrive

hello all

i have a 2010 320i with idrive sat nav. As you can see the map version [attached] mine is very old. I read in the manual it talks about a DVD but then i read here also its a USB update method. How can i find out how i can do this? i am thinking i can purchase a latest 2018/2019 maps and update my car.

anyone got any guidance?

Look in uk technical section and follow the 2019-1 map post. If it's that old you might not have tick on i in nav screen and need DVD or ista/p update method if has been upgraded though you'll be fine with USB. Many seem to have issues with burning dual layer DVD for updates/car not reading them but worth a try. If you really can't get anywhere I have a genuine bmw DVD set for 2014-1 I need to get around to selling that is far newer than what you're using but see if you can get latest working first.

What's confusing me is that there is 2 ways to update; DVD (is the player below the climate control also DVD player? I thought it was only a CD PLAYER ?) Or USB? Is that right?

I though CCC was dvd and CIC was usb?, if it’s a 2010 it should be a CIC ?

Get the maps on usb and a activation code, pop the usb in the port in glovebox, the car will recognise it on satnav screen and ask for code, put it in then the maps will start loading to car, showing a % loaded. I seem to recal it takes about 30 mins to do, so do it when you go for a drive.

The ccc is the older system, I think to around late 2008/ early 2009, the later CIC is a hard drive system with the controller having home, radio, nav buttons on it.

Yours should be a CIC system, you’ll just need to make sure you get the correct ‘premium’ version of sat nav map.

The above is not quite correct. If you have a 2010 car you will have CIC idrive. If you do not have the tic you still cant update by DVD you have to do it via USB. Mines a December 2009 with pro nav CIC, I dont have the tic and tried to buy a DVD (I had read that you need the tic to be able to do USB update) to update my nav from BMW's ebay store. They messaged me asking for my vin and told me CIC would need a USB update and asked me to go to a BMW service center to inquire.

I still haven't and am stuck on 2009 maps. Really need to update soon

Loads of threads about upating and how to do, and certainly not paying when you can do for free (just takes a small bit of downloading time and small pain free effort):

1) Pull 1b file from car using method/script on usb detailed.
2) Run the generator choosing the mapping required and using the 1b file from above.
3) Copy code and use to install the updated mapping (download for free online never pay for them).

Hi, not quite think you've got a bit mixed up here and bmw haven't helped! With no tick on i you need DVD or ista/p, USB would fail midway unless firmware updated to get tick on i. Bmw are a bit clueless sometimes and as they haven't sold DVDs for cic for quite some time they'll have suggested USB as that's what they now sell and sales staff wouldn't know any better (when they hear DVD they'll assume you have ccc despite saying cic and still need DVDs). The 2014-1 I have is definitely for cic (probably one of the last DVD releases they did) and updates fine via DVD although I have latest cic firmware so usually use USB as it's faster etc. Others with 2009 maps and no tick on i have updated via DVD but it's a nightmare to get the dual layer DVDs to burn in a way cic will fully read apparently.

Last I knew the generator didn't have 2019-1 option in it, not sure if they've updated it since?

Oh forgot about the tick, my 2010 e91 and 2011 e92 were both usb with tick, so it was the usb route.

I was told if you had no tick it would need a firmware update to use usb, but only for cars built between 09/09-03/10.

Thanks that's good to know. My cars in for the 2 recalls to be fixed first week of Jan so I will have a chat with the guys in the service centre about it. Maybe they will be willing to update the firmware while it's in there. Probably wishful thinking though.

Certainly is (2019-2 also for when that edition is released), I upgraded mine to 2019-1 last weekend

Ok great I do mine via 319 bytes hex file and fsc.exe so I'm good to go regardless good to know the easy options are still supported though!

I very much doubt it, have heard it mentioned it's a nav out job but not sure. Either way dealer can only update all modules in one go and no way they'd risk bricking some modules, I'd be amazed if they do but by all means ask. Otherwise invest in dual layer DVDs/get a copy of ista/p ready to go

I just updated mine, (09/2008 E91) last night, it was;

ECE, BMW, 1.1.31, Road Map Europe Premium 2008-1
now it is;
ECE, BMW Group, 401171.2.10, Road Map West Europe Premium 2018-1

Process was pretty straight forward, most difficult bit was retrieving the 1B file from the car onto a USB, then just went through the steps highlighted in other threads, copied the contents of 1 USB folder at a time from the laptop to the drive and about an hour later, they'd installed onto the car. Took me a bit over 2 hours not inclusive of downloading the maps.

I been looking at these as mine are Road Map Europe PREMIUM 2011

There are quite a few sellers on eBay who say that they are genuine sellers for this product with the correct BMW code with an update to 2019

One is £45

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-CIC-N....c101006.m3226

and the other is £34

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-CIC-N....c100005.m1851

I cannot see any difference

It looks like you buy the update - they then send you a link to download the update file to a USB stick and then they give you a BMW code

There are also quite a few sellers on eBay selling a "genuine" BMW DVD to update to 2018 - they appear to be £18

Confusing

Considering the how to do it for free info has already been given in this thread it baffles me why anyone would pay for it - and certainly not those prices.

Jus download what’s needed and do it yourself. The updates gonna take about 45mins no matter where you obtain the files/code from.

Have a look in my earlier post, there’s a torrent link to the 2019-1 mapping. You’ve done the process once and already have the 1b file so will be a doddle.

don't you need an official code from BMW to make the maps legit?

wouldn't want to update something that screwed up my iDrive

The generator creates the code, it’s the same code you’d end up buying online at your afore mentioned sites and the same code the dealer would give you. There’s nothing that can mess your idrive up and the dealer isn’t ever going to go looking and claim you didn’t get the maps or code from them.
